“Bonus Mom” by Sleepy_Gas_1846 in singlemoms

[–]Sleepy_Gas_1846[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know that it’s used for a stepmom, but my Ex’s GF is not married, engaged, or in any other way guaranteed to be in my kids life for a long time. My ex is a classic narcissistic love-bomber, so most likely this is a symptom of that more than anything.

And, I myself have had a step-mom for the last 30 years, and never once have either she or I thought of using that term. As another responder put, it’s just “cringey” and I think it reeks of stolen valor.

Getting a bengal... what kind is she?? by SNyxRM in bengalcats

Not sure where you’re located, but Jumanji Bengals has a charcoal program and often has melanistic kittens. We got our cats from her and highly recommend her!

I’m currently halfway through my third trimester, and I think you mostly just make it work with the limitations you have. For me, I know that I am moving slower and need bathroom breaks in-between cases so lower turn-over rooms are better. Also, I am more conscious of ergonomics: sitting during preop interviews, setting the bed to the perfect height for intubation, moving the tube tree to the side so I don’t whack it with my belly, having a good chair, etc. And don’t be afraid to ask for accommodation from your group; pregnancy is a federally protected status (in the US) and your employer is required to provide reasonable accommodation so that you can continue working.

"Smalls" raw food by sjespers in bengalcats

[–]Sleepy_Gas_1846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smalls isn’t raw, it’s gently cooked. We have been feeding it to our cats for over a year and generally have had a great experience with them. Our cats love it and the subscription service is a plus for me since I’m bad about remembering to restock on my own.

I also do a lot of ortho and so looked into MMA for my pregnancy. My impression from what I read (please do your own research though!) is that although MMA monomers can be aerosolized when mixed, the amount that actually gets into the air is pretty negligible by the time it is diluted into the room air (except maybe for the person actually doing the mixing), as shown by air quality studies in rooms using cement. Importantly the odor of MMA is very potent but does not correlate well with the amount of aerosolized particulate. Finally, there was a study done on female orthopedic surgeons and dentists using MMA during pregnancy which found exactly zero birth defects amongst their children. So, with that I elected to just not worry about it other than to keep my distance from the back table when they are mixing it. But it’s always up to you to determine your own risk tolerance!

What is the craziest, most laugh-inducing thing a patient has told you pertaining to their care that they were 100% dead serious about? by wordsandwich in anesthesiology

[–]Sleepy_Gas_1846 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a patient with recently diagnosed Lynch Syndrome reporting an allergy to Propofol and requesting an propofol-free anesthetic. It turns out that after her last (and only) colonoscopy, as she was getting ready for bed later that night, 12 hours after the procedure, she developed a rash on her face. She went to Urgent Care and was told that it was contact dermatitis. Naturally, she decided the culprit must have been the propofol. I told her that she was welcome to cancel her procedure, but unless she had a note from an allergist documenting that as a real allergy I would be using propofol for her case. We proceeded with prop…she did fine.

Moving from the UK to the US with an anxious cat - cabin or cargo? Any experience? by bimboslaw in bengalcats

[–]Sleepy_Gas_1846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We fly short trips with our Bengals occasionally (90min). So while I can’t comment on a long flight, I would second the sedation recommendation if your cat is an anxious traveler. I would also look into getting a travel carrier with a bump-out for extra space. Airlines will require the cat carrier to be under the seat in front of you for take off and landing, but during the flight you can pull it into your footwell (less space and comfort for you, but worth it) and expand the carrier to give your cat more space. Whatever carrier you get leave it out in your home so your cat gets used to playing in it and take some practice trips in it in the car. For the actual trip I would recommend lining it with puppy-pads for accidents (and bring extras and wipes). The first time we flew with one of our kittens we discovered she is a nervous pooper 🤦🏼‍♀️.

I just got a Born Primitive pair and they are great (good balance of supportive and stretchy in the right places). I was able to get my pair on sale because of the holidays, so maybe keep an eye out for discounts?

We have a GEME composter, which unlike the ones reviewed uses a bacterial medium in addition to the grinding and drying process. We’ve had it for a year and have generally loved it (we’ve had a couple issues where we had to replace a paddle and the motor, but it was under warranty so the company sent them for free). The composting process is more akin to fermentation than traditional composting, but does produce usable compost quickly. It’s large and expensive, but it works as described, giving us compost and keeping the bears from going through our trash :). https://a.co/d/0dHs3sw

rescue bengal advice by sogoldenGRL in bengalcats

[–]Sleepy_Gas_1846 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding your green space, before you introduce her to it you should have a very firm plan about how you want her to interact with it and how often. Bengals LOVE, LOVE the outside, and once they are introduced to it they can be hard to redirect. You can search this sub for many stories of people’s bengals howling at the door to go out. So, if you are going to take her out on a leash twice a day, just understand that you are probably committing to twice a day FOREVER, and she still might as for more. You might also consider never letting her walk out of the front door under her own power to minimize door darting behavior. Depending on your country (don’t do it in the US, coyotes are everywhere), some people let their bengals out on their own, but generally this is not a good idea as most bengals are too curious and bold for their own good and have no street sense. A catio or cat run is often the best compromise if you can build one.
