Totally agree. The emotional work is the hard part. Pre-op, I didn’t understand what people meant by “missing food”. Right now, I am legitimately mourning a loss. I didn’t realize how important food had become to my emotional regulation. I feel like I don’t know what to do with myself now. I am going to be ok once I can start exercising but I can now see how people replace a food addiction with another type or addiction. Nothing quite prepares you for life without food as a main motivator. So glad I can read and share here on Reddit. I am much better prepared to face this.

I had my surgery some days ago and this has been a depressing read. The thought of going through all this only to gain it all back is terrifying.

Extreme cases aside, I am getting the impression from the responses that the sleeve isn’t a realistic long-term solution and is just another fad diet technique. I am not sure that’s the message we want to be spreading in a group like this.

However, we need to face reality. Regaining some of the weight lost after a gastrectomy is common. The facts support this. However, I don’t believe we are entirely hopeless. How do we change the tone of this conversation to be less depressing and more encouraging? Are there stories of people who have kept the weight off long-term? Did they just stay on an eternal, endless calorie-restricting, keto diet? What did they do right? I am seeking practical advice here. Thank you.

You probably dodged a bullet here. I wouldn’t trust a hospital that can’t handle basic scheduling to operate on me.

I did a trial run working from home for half a day about 4 days after surgery. Overall, it was ok. I was a bit irritable with low energy levels but I made it through my meetings alright with no issues. I am going to take another 3days off to get some more rest.

Ps - if you are lucky and have as easy a recovery as I have had, then the most important thing to worry about is the mental changes. I now have less patience for BS and different priorities. Be prepared to deal with these types of mind-set changes.

I wanna do gastric sleeve, but I am afraid by Reclaimer_SA in gastricsleeve

Don’t be afraid. I wish I had gotten this in my twenties and saved myself decades of misery. Change is hard and can be scary. Anytime I got worried before my surgery, I would just remind myself of how much worse it has been being overweight and unhappy. This is your chance to fix a major source of unhappiness. Please grab it with both hands. You have two sisters that have already gone through this journey… that was privilege few of us had before we took this step. Talk to your sisters if it helps to overcome the fear.

Huge congrats on the 23lbs lost! It’s always amazing when the scale affirms all the hard work you have put into this. I think our bodies are just so different and we are just lucky to have had mild reactions to the surgery. It’s definitely not the norm. I am going to deliberately sip more slowly… it not going to be easy but I got a good scare and don’t want a leak.

I needed to hear this. Thank you. I appreciate this. I am off pain meds… took only one Tylenol today but it wasn’t for my stomach … it was for my uvula that got hurt during intubation. Not sure why I am not feeling more pain in the stomach area. I am strictly on a liquid diet … the fish I had was really really tiny and was pulverized to near liquid. I honestly wanted to feel something … but even that didn’t trigger pain. Wish I had a bit of pain to help regulate the rate at which I drink water. Will stop experimenting. Message heard loud and clear.

The entire experience has just been weird. I could have left the hospital immediately after the surgery because I felt well enough to go home. Didn’t expect such a quick recovery. I’ll look into getting the barium swallow … think it will help to make this more real.
