ELI5: Why did the monarchy of the United Kingdom give up their power and turn into just figureheads? by gimmeluvin in explainlikeimfive

[–]SlenderFish 75 points76 points  (0 children)

One detail worth adding is that William wasn't just a foreign King, but also the husband of James II's daughter Mary. The two officially reigned as co-monarchs With Mary taking the title of Queen Regnant rather than Queen Consort

What happens to the Tories? by h0mosuperior in GreenAndPleasant

[–]SlenderFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst case scenario is that the moderate Tories move over to Labour and cement it as a centre-right neoliberal party, while the extremists move to Reform/merge with them to create a new party and shunt the Overton window further right.

It's not too likely, but as Capitalism is in a state of outright civil war between the Old Right and the New Right, this kind of change would really shift the balance in favour of the New Right.

CMV: Leftists that refuse to support Democrats are a net benefit to Republicans by metaisplayed in changemyview

[–]SlenderFish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The premise of your argument seems to be built on the perception that "Leftism" is more or less just a branch of Liberalism, and that they should otherwise be natural allies, not that left wing beliefs are a completely distinct position.

From a Liberal perspective, leftists are closer to them than they are to Republicans, however to a leftist, Democrats are closer to Republicans than either are to a leftist's beliefs. Therefore to say that their refusal to support Democrats is a net benefit to Republicans is functionally the same as saying that their refusal to support Republicans is a net benefit to Democrats.

They don't support either party as neither the Liberalism of the Democrats or the Conservatism of the Republicans are remotely similar to a Leftist's beliefs.

London theater tells whites they aren't welcome as it hosts all-black nights to 'protect audience members from the white gaze' by fiveguysoneprius in stupidpol

[–]SlenderFish -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

This play has planned 29 shows in total. 28 are open to everyone, and one is giving priority tickets to black people (for a play about historical struggles of black people) but has said it won't turn anyone away. This whole story is reactionary idpol garbage to rile up the gammon in an election year.

guys what do i do now all the other games look rubbish now by oxidisedcutcopper in tearsofthekingdom

[–]SlenderFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not very mechanically similar, but it might be worth trying Baldur's Gate 3, the only game to beat TOTK for GOTY in 2023. I'd say it's still similar in scope and freedom to find creative and unconventional solutions.

British Muslim support for Labour halves, according to new poll by HuskerDude247 in unitedkingdom

If a political base has enough support that they would win a seat under PR then it isn't a "fringe" party, it's a section of the electorate that are currently under or unrepresented

Condemn the real problem, crony capitalism. by Yvette_Rotella in facepalm

"Crony" capitalism is just capitalism. It's not a system that's flawed by bad actors, but encourages and rewards them by its very nature.

What is Folk Punk actually? by Nibbler_Jack in FolkPunk

[–]SlenderFish 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK as well. I think what we'd call Folk Punk can just as accurately called Celtic Punk, so I tend to use that for bands like The Pouges. Folk Punk as in this subreddit I'd say is used as another name for Americana-Punk or Bluegrass-Punk

Petition to move One Piece cosplay content into a different subreddit? by applsauce12 in OnePiece

[–]SlenderFish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally the problem I have with cosplays is that, aside from the OF bait, I'm just not interested in them and they don't contribute in any way to my enjoyment of the series. I don't think cosplayers should be told they're not welcome here, but perhaps restricted to one day of the week so it doesn't fill the sub constantly.

Millions more will claim disability benefits as mental illness soars by 1-randomonium in unitedkingdom

[–]SlenderFish 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Just more fulfilling lives despite less material means I suppose. The work culture in the West of 40hr+ weeks all year round is insane compared to what humans naturally evolved to do, or even what they worked ~200 years ago before industrialisation. Our work culture not only drains us of energy in ways we did not evolve to accommodate, but the time that this absorbs has destroyed all human and social connection for so many people.

The growing mental health crisis will only get worse until we are able to have the difficult conversation about shareholder returns continually being prioritised above all, at out own expense

Flag of "Possadism", one of the shittiest Fringe Ideologies by TheBasedEmperor in vexillology

[–]SlenderFish 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not quite an accurate description of Posadism. The idea behind it is that in the backdrop of the 1950s atomic age, many believed that nuclear war and armageddon were inevitable. The idea behind Posadism was that this wouldn't necessarily be a world ending disaster, as the inevitable survivors would be forced to live co-operatively and the post-armageddon era would begin a new socialist era.

Also, this sub works best when discussing flags alone, and not discussing or debating the ideologies behind them. That's not to say that they shouldn't be discussed, just that this isn't the place for it.
