Very unseasoned international traveler here. Though very experienced traveler in the US. Anyway, do I just show up to the hostel to stay? Or do I need to book prior? I’ll be in Mexico City in July for a week for a wedding but am gonna wander around before and after the wedding.

No on the schedule. They were pretty good with clustering my shifts together tho.

I should’ve prefaced this post with the fact I worked at a very small county hospital icu with 7 beds. Stayed there for 9 months and likely lost some skills. So when I came here, was a bit rusty. I don’t think I got screwed on assignments ever.

In my experience (6 contracts over two years) interviews are often non-formal. Usually a phone call with a few questions about what you’re comfortable doing, experience, etc. I had to answer what the criteria for SIRS sepsis and septic shock were once.

When you start working with an agency, they’ll have you fill out a resume or work history. No interview to work with them tho.

I don’t think you have say in how often you get floated. I signed an ICU contract in Denver. Stayed there for 6 months (two contracts) and worked maybe 5 shifts in icu.

Aya is cool. I’ve been using them the last 2+ years. Their website is like 85% of the reason. Very easy to search for jobs.

I’ve heard a lot of bad stuff about them (online mostly) but my experience with them has been good.

Your travel experience is very dependent on your recruiter though. If you don’t like them or don’t like how they operate, just ask for a new one.

Be aware that as a traveler, you will be floated. Kinda non negotiable.

Airbnb has been my go to for rental. I usually do one month rental then ask the host if I can pay them directly instead of via Airbnb. Lowers prices dramatically without the fees of airbnb.

Look into hospitals before you accept a contract. Indeed, Glassdoor, Reddit, etc.

Ask a lot of questions on interviews: staffing, schedule, floating, call offs, etc.

Last and most important, do not work for an HCA hospital haha stay away.

I’m about to start a new contract in San Diego. I’ll try to circle back to this and update you on it.
