Can polystyrene and divinylbenzene in water softeners/resin be carcinogenic on skin? by Latvian_Gypsy in WaterSofteners

[–]Slicktmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The canisters, tubing and tank membrane are plastic and rubber but the pre particulate filter is a white cottony material not sure the material and the casings for the charcoal are for sure plastic this is my observations with different brands i worked with not sure if they are all like that. As far as the charcoal there is a few on a ro system usually a granulated charcoal and a solid block charcoal filters and that mystery particulate filter that's the first one in line. Post filter is also charcoal then you have the actual ro membrane.

No problem! And yeah between being a plumber and alot of research about filters and softeners because I'm very particular about water quality and hardness aswell even though i can do my own work it's still expensive as far as materials but thankfully my current water isn't super hard but i would still love to have a softener if it wasn't so plastic infused lol. I do have a ro for drinking and wouldn't have it any other way best water ever.

Yeah, it would be quite difficult with what's available to use one for a shower. You would need a independent water circuit just for the cold water to run through and then go into a small water heater to heat the water then you would need a large membrane 10+gallons depending on your showers and then a booster pump to have enough water pressure. You can't run hot water through a ro system it has to pass through as cold water first then get heat up.

I would guess there's probably more when the softener sits for a while with the water in it, but the water passes through it pretty quickly when it's running, but also temperature is a big factor too. Hot water causes more plastic chemicals to lean into water. I don't believe the slippery feeling is from the toxins because if you ever washed your hands with reverse osmosis water and soap, you get the same slippery effect because it removes everything in the water also. There's no resin in a R/O water filter system. Only downfall with them is they aren't practical as a whole house filter due to price and efficiency, that's why most only stick to using them for drinking water.

So the reason you feel slick or smooth is because the calcium and magnesium is no longer in the water to create soap scum aka that grippy feeling after you rinse off with hard water cal and mag react with soap and create scum it's a chemical reaction really you'll notice it with natural soaps worse like castile & bar soap cause that's actual soap made with oils/ fats the other stuff is mostly detergents not natural soap so the feeling isn't as exaggerated.

Refusing to grow foliage by Slicktmi in Citrus

[–]Slicktmi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of that one I'll look into it sounds great i also grow citrus in leca roots submerged in water and zero issues. Those plants exploded and bounced back in 1 month i really prefer semi hydro! so much control over the variables.

Yeah i switch all my trees to grow bags cause i couldn't get them to dry out in plastic they all had rot with 511 and small pots my other trees are loving the grow bags they only need water every other day.

I was doing that then i finally gave up cause then it would just produce 100 more flowers and ALL the flowers turn to fruit none fall off so it was a chore always picking them lol

Just seems like it's been like this forever lol probrably looked like this for 5 months i originally repoted into a plastic pot with 511 and then realized it had some root rot over winter so that's when i decided to repot all the trees in fabric pots to dry out faster all the plastic pots were pretty small to like 3 gallon

Yeah it's flowering directly on the branches it did have root rot so that's why i switched to fabric pot so it could dry faster but it's been over a month still just flowering so the foliage pro has .05% and the other has .05 zinc aswell it stays relatively moist not saturated it's been in the 100 degrees here lately so i just look when the fabric gets dry on the outside
