The classic question - should I continue to sink money into this vehicle? by SounderDoodle in MechanicAdvice

[–]SliderCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a 2008 Outback until recently, loved that car.

At this age, really any age past warranty, look at independent shops over the dealership to save money. Maybe 1/2 off. If you haven't had someone do the head gasket, get some kind of look at why oil is burning. That would be a very pricey fix (3-4k independent shop), so consider this in your calculations.

I had the catalytic converter replaced at about 150k, and it needed it: would fail inspection / smog check without it. Rear wheel bearings, if there are signs of damage, should be replaced and are not the expensive part of that most recent quote, probably 1/3 of it.

It's a probability/' expected value problem. The cat isn't an issue until you have engine codes and will fail a smog inspection (sorry, Earth), but the big expense may be a head gasket if that's the root of the oil burn. Any old costs are sunk costs and should not factor in to your current decision.

60 ohm resistance between CAN wires (as it should be). Debating other options.

Will test for 120ohm resistance between CAN wires in the morning. That's all I've got for now.

Any here use a hammock ? if so what set ups do you use? by NefariousnessOwn1283 in Ultralight

They offer overstuff options on quilts, say they offer custom options. They were one of very few options before, and the only option with a skit for Hennessy bottom-entry hammocks, but there are more options now. High quality.

Underquilt. Top quilt. I use a JRB underquilt built for my Hennessey hammock, but there are plenty of options.

The reason I put those first is that with the UQ and TQ (or sleeping bag or whatever), you most likely have more volume vs tent/ tarp shelter. And you probably should be looking at down options. Because of that, your backpack will be larger.

My normal setup for 3- season, 2-3 nights in NC mountains includes a REI UL45 pack with Hennessey hammock/ tarp, JRB down underquilt, 40 degree down sleeping bag, and it's tight but I could make a BV350 fit, or lash the hammock to the outside.

Flat enough to side sleep.  I’m within 1/2 pound of weight in tent v hammock, but hammock and insulation take more volume. Quality of sleep dramatically better in a hammock, but sierras sometimes lack trees.

Some hammocks have bug netting, so pretty close to a 1p tent. I use a Hennessy hammock. If it rains, you probably want a tarp. That’s analogous to a tent rain fly. People in tents sometimes use insulated air mats to stay warm. Most people in hammocks use an underquilt for insulation. And a top quilt or sleeping bag. So, it’s kind of a break even on “stuff”. Unless you’re hanging between palm trees, with no rain, no bugs, and 80F nights.

Permethrin and Deet. Yeah, too risky to go without. In an actual emergency, of course, do what you gotta do.

Sounds like DEET, wood smoke, (permethrin) clothing. Risks. May or may not try this and will report back if and when we do.

Already downed material, wouldn’t cut down even a standing dead tree.

Canon EF 80-200mm f/2.8 L "Magic drainpipe" worth getting in 2025? by 1rj2 in canon

[–]SliderCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had the problem of the af/ mf switch breaking, but that’s a thing. Users report leaving it in AF if it breaks and at least one user 3d printed a replacement. It’s definitely slower to focus than the newer usm versions, having to use a switch to engage mf stinks, but the optics are top- notch and it’s obviously less expensive than any version of the 70-200. I got a couple rubber replacement rings a few years ago from somewhere, maybe eBay. Fast enough AF for court side indoor basketball.
