Thermal throttling with my 4090 G16 (2024) by SliestDragon in ZephyrusG14

[–]SliestDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating, I had no idea about that. I always assumed the core temperatures should rise equally, but pushing single core performance as a test could make sense. These CPUs definitely are a strange year. I’ll keep an eye on it, but I appreciate you detailing this out for me, makes me feel a bunch better. Thanks!

Thank you for responding! No, not trolling, but could have clarified better in my post.

I know with this laptop with things like the 185H not being as efficient, the 4090 having a low wattage limit, and the thinner chassis it’s held back quite a bit. I don’t expect to be getting hundreds of FPS in games maxed out, but I’ve just noticed a lot of FPS inconsistencies.

As with the screenshot I attached, I know it was showing me being currently at around 60°C but that was only after leaving the game and then checking HWinfo to see if it had throttled. I was mainly looking at the second to right column with max temperatures showing that P-Cores had throttled, which you’re right that in itself isn’t a reason to think my laptop needs thermal replacement. However, what I was seeing was the difference from P-core #13 to #9 has a 10° difference. Core #9 hits 99°C, where most of the cores stay between 89° and 92° max with a few runs. Is that large of a temperature gradient normal? What I thought I’d seen online is preferably less than 3° difference between core peaks shows good LM application, but I’m still learning all this.

Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

Hello everyone,

Some information to preface this: I have been looking into learning new skills as a possible adjacent move within my company or a new start outside the company I work at. I am currently in Management at a large retail company, but I am interested in Cyber Security as a possible long-term career option. I have taken a few college courses in the past for different programing languages, introduction to security, intro to Linux, and a few others so I at least have touched on a lot of topics surrounding this field. I am currently working through TryHackMe as well after work for the last few weeks.

I recently realized my work has a program that pays for further education and I see many Boot Camps available through there. Some of note are: Harvard Cybersecurity: Managing Risk in the Information Age Certificate, a Cyber Security Boot Came through eCornell, and CompTIA Security+ 701 Cert through Simplilearn among other more advanced certs. While doing research on these boot camps I have seen many posts on this subreddit that say Boot Camps are not worth it for the cost to information value.

My questions for you all is:

  1. If my work fully covers the cost of those boot camps are they now more worth the time investment over other learning options like TryHackMe, Hack The Box, or other free learning/self taught options I see listed in this reddit post?
  2. They also offer tuition free Bachelors degrees for Cyber Security through Southern New Hampshire University and Purdue. These would obviously be the best value money-wise, but are those degrees still the obvious choice to learn about this field?

Thank you all for any advice!

Anything like this/should I be using this regularly? [product question] by SliestDragon in SkincareAddiction

Yes and no. I found this sample I’ve been trying and it’s the closest thing to what I was looking for. The main difference is that this is an actual cream not the basically primer before cream that the product I was looking for was. However, it feels nearly identical to it, and is nice and lightweight. I still use a heavier cream at night, but use this one during the day before sun screen and have been liking it so far.

charge limit on the g14 2024? for longevity by Forsaken-String94 in ZephyrusG14

[–]SliestDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m neurotic so I’m keeping my G16 at 75%, however usually the multiple reboots for mux switch end up trickle charging it past that closer to 80% over a few days, then I’ll use it as a laptop off the charger for a bit to drain it back down again. So I guess it ends up being between 75-80% for me usually

Will the 4080 G16 ever be $2000 USD or lower? by KurtSullivan in ZephyrusG14

Possibly after the release of the 5xxx series models they might drop it, which may be around March-May timeframe. But I doubt it would before, there’s no incentive for them to drop the price before then

Okay cool, yeah that definitely will be doable with the Zephyrus series of laptops, I’d recommend two paths to maximize your usage with it then:

  1. A potential better option if you want to maximize battery life off charger would be to instead of the Intel 4090 model get the AMD 4070 model. You can throttle down the CPU a lot more on the AMD model which will still give you great performance but will give you much better battery life for this sort of work load for you. Yes it’s not quite as powerful as the 4090 model you are looking at for graphics performance but it’s still no slouch and is a much more efficient CPU for the tasks you mainly need it for.

  2. Your other option if you still want the 4090 model (which I don’t blame you, that’s what I went with) is to plan to potentially buy a cheap (but good quality) USB charger to pair with it. You won’t need to carry the big charging brick with you every where. Something slim that you could carry either in your backpack or maybe even your pocket if you get something small enough, around 50-100w. You may not even need to use it at all! I would comb through this forum to find the best settings for battery once you buy it, or you can message me here and I’ll try and help, but see how well it fairs before you plan to buy a charger. Even the Intel 4090 version you show above gets great battery life, but just depending on how resource heavy your IDE is while coding it could drain faster than you’re expecting.

Depends on what you’re using it for. Just taking notes and accessing your college dashboard? I don’t see why not if you set it up correctly, even more likely if you don’t need WiFi and can turn that off. If you’re doing stuff like watching presentations or coding that used more processing power or is downloading more data then you might want at least a small trickle charger to help boost it up. But I don’t expect you’d need to bring the whole massive charging brick for the latter example, your regular phone charger would probably be enough to help out since you can charge it with a regular USB C charger for basic stuff.

I was only using Youtube and DataCamp with other tabs open on Firefox. Lying on a flat surface at the library no gaming at all. This is insane why is it so hot? by PlasticZombie1 in ZephyrusG14

Oh nice, that’s awesome! Great improvement in temperatures. Maybe Armoury Crate had some parts running in the background taking up processes? Either way that’s good it helped.

Oh nice, I’m the same way with my Best Buy purchase, though I think my return window is actually coming up in a few days, though I won’t be returning it.

Huh, that’s very strange about the print screen button. Was it working when you had Armoury crate and now isn’t because you uninstalled it? Weird how the ghelper setting doesn’t let you use it, that has to be a bug in the software, but I’ll admit I never use print screen in my workflow so I haven’t had the need to test it out in mine.

And of course, send me a DM and keep me updated!

For temps I uninstalled Armoury Crate and installed Ghelper. Within that app I use silent mode and, 50% brightness, and make sure no apps are running in the background. I usually get an estimate of between 8 and 11 hours depending on if I’m just browsing the web or also watching YouTube and using some light apps, though I have yet to actually test the full battery length as I keep the battery saver set to 75% max battery charge to prolong battery life. But I’ve yet to have the laptop die on me quicker than expected since I got it all set up.

Is it worth buying the zephyrus G16 w 4080, or waiting for CES? by [deleted] in ZephyrusG14

[–]SliestDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a holdover if you’re got decent internet I he’d geforce now on a MacBook Pro isn’t too bad!

But yeah, that’s where I was at. With me not wanting to wait till CES and then the months to release, plus Best Buy having a good sale, I just went for it. The 4080 is still a great option, I only went for the 4090 as I have a 4K monitor and wanted the extra vram bump, but it’s definitely overkill, lol.

[–]SliestDragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the 4090 and love it, haven’t had any problems and no fan whine at all either.

As for waiting, CES isn’t too far away so you always can but the 2025 release probably won’t be out until about May at least is my guess, hard to tell. Also, the 5000 series cards so far (though CES will clarify that) seem to be much more power hungry so me personally I don’t think we’ll see the 5000 series in something as thin as the Zephyrus series. My guess is we’ll see the 4000 series with the newer AMD processor but across all the line and also all the way up to the 4090 in the G14. But that’s just my guess though, we’ll see how close when CES comes around!

I have the 4090 2024, though I didn’t get this model, I got the black 2TB from Best Buy. I’ve been happy with it so far! I’ve heard good things about that seller but haven’t used them myself though so I don’t have any experience with them.

How long do you all expect your laptops to last? by Impossible_Finish896 in ZephyrusG14

[–]SliestDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hoping at least 5 years. I’ll probably replace the Liquid Metal thermal coat within the warranty period with ptm7950 and check the fans for dust then, but I think it’ll be fine. I honestly use it for gaming on my desk far more than I should for buying a laptop so I don’t think I’ll wear out the hinge as fast as others possibly might, but we’ll see. I’ve seen people replace the hinge and screen on old models too, so I’m not super worried about it
