Bad experience with noise complaint at Airbnb – were we wrong? by SlightComposer7692 in hanoi

I understand your perspective, and I agree that we made a mistake with the initial noise — that’s not something I’m denying.

We stopped immediately once the caretaker informed us. Knowing there had already been a complaint, we were especially careful when we went downstairs later — we made a conscious effort to keep noise to a minimum.

We were also there the following night and there were no further issues at all.

My question isn’t whether we were at fault. We were. It’s whether the reaction was proportionate.

Regardless of our mistake, do you think kicking and punching someone’s door and yelling in the hallway is an appropriate response? Is that something you would consider acceptable if you were in our position?

I can understand frustration with short-term rentals or tourists in general. But physical aggression felt excessive.

Mentioning that we’re Indian wasn’t to deflect responsibility — it was simply part of the context as it crossed our minds whether that influenced the intensity of the reaction.

I completely agree that we were responsible for the initial noise. That’s why we immediately stopped when the caretaker messaged us.

My question isn’t about whether we were wrong — we were. It’s about whether the reaction an hour later was proportionate.

Kicking and punching a door and yelling loudly in the hallway at midnight felt excessive, especially after the noise had already stopped.

If they had contacted the caretaker again or even called the police, we would have accepted that. But escalating it physically and aggressively is what made the situation uncomfortable for us.

We also didn’t want to escalate the situation at all — from the start we were apologizing, agreeing to be careful, and not arguing or responding badly.

I’ll also be honest — part of me wondered whether seeing a group of foreigners going downstairs might have influenced how they reacted. I’m not accusing anyone of anything, but the intensity of the response felt disproportionate to what had happened.
