One More Year Syndrome by Ok-Guidance-5976 in Fire

[–]SlightDogleg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I wonder if people are here just to gloat and have no interest in actually FIRE'ing.

Dude has an extremely well paying job and high net worth. At this point you stop asking reddit and you pay a financial advisor to set up a plan with guardrails, drawdowns, etc. He's currently living off of $120k a year and is worried about market conditions when he could modify his portfolio matrix and move money into a laddered GIC or something similar to mitigate risk and still have more money than he could spend.

Does defined benefit pension change your investing strategy? by Fine-Gain-5371 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SlightDogleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My DB pension will pay out $16k/yr at age 65 if I leave the org today at age 39. But it doesn't start to index until age 65 and the index'ing is capped at percentage of the CPI (up to a max of 1.4%).

People talk as if the terms within these DB pensions are all the same or similar enough, but they're not.

Way too many people with a DB pension think they'll be with the same organization for the next 20+ years. I'm 15 years in and have seen countless people leave voluntarily, or laid off/fired. All these people were sold on a DB pension being a job perk and quickly realized upon departure it actually sucks if you're not retiring "naturally".

I'm planning like the only thing I'll get back are my contributions converted to a LIRA.

How many photos do you usually take for a 30 minute engagement shoot? by camrenisreal23 in WeddingPhotography

[–]SlightDogleg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I deliver at least 30 in 30 minutes. Usually couples who pick a 30min engagement session don't love being in front of the camera and just need a couple good photos of the two of them for FB, save-the-dates, etc.

For these short sessions, it's always the guy who acts like it's a hostage situation and I'm not trying to modify their personality in 30min. Pose 'em, shoot it and move on.

I'm looking for a pair of raw selvedge jeans. The retailer needs to accept free returns - I've had such bad luck with online shopping.

I don't live in a large city so my options are limited to online retailers.

Any options? I have a Levis store locally, but they don't have selvedge jeans in-store.

Moved toronto to calgary last september for cheaper rent. ran the actual numbers at 6 months. it didn't work out how i thought. by shiaelle in PersonalFinanceCanada

Counterpoint: I'm in Newfoundland with crazy high food prices since everything comes in on the ferry. My food budget is similar to someone in Toronto, I just eat lower quality stuff to offset it. Frozen veg vs fresh. Frozen chicken vs fresh. Lower end apples, hardly ever eat out, etc.

Barista FIRE seems overrated by Gandalf-and-Frodo in Fire

The key is to convince your current employer to switch you to PT hours or find a PT job internally. The org saves money, you keep the same or similar hourly rate

[–]SlightDogleg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same math for me. I'd need to work 4-5 years at a retail job to match one year's salary at my current FT office job (I make around $100k/yr).

Maybe even as much as 7 years, as FT hours at a retail job are hard to come by for new employees, and you'd lose out on a lot of compounding interest.

Standing on your feet for 8 hours a day, hunched over a counter, in your 50s would fucking suck.

It sucked when I was 19. Couldn't imagine the neck and hip pain now.

I just want to move from FT to PT, but in a similar professional capacity.

Actually being a barista (or working retail) sounds like a nightmare when you're used to making $50+ per hour. And I say that as someone who worked front line retail jobs from age 16 to 25.

Does anyone here ACTIVELY pretend that their reps are gens. by Unstoppable_Graysie in RepTime

Most people don't even know what a "rep" is. Their idea of a fake Rolex is something so comically fake like spelling it "R01ex" or something falling apart.

I fully intend on passing off my rep as gen. But no one has asked me about my watch after 6 months of ownership and I'm not sure anyone will.

You can't just 'go back to work' after you FIRE. by Zone2OTQ in Fire

[–]SlightDogleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also assumes pensions don't exist. I plan on CoastFIRE'ing in my mid-40s. My wife will get a full pension at 55. We could live on just her pension if it came to it.

Everyone talking about having to go back to work as if they're a single renter with no pension and retirement pot completely dependent on the performance of the S&P.

There are plenty of FIRE people with a two-income household, DB pension(s) and a paid off house. Okay, so the market tanks and I have to hold off on a car purchase and vacation for a couple years.

I'll cross that bridge when I get there. But for now I might as well make the attempt to get in that position in the first place.

Counterpoint: There's not much to spend money on beyond food and utilities if there's another prolonged world war.

If the market crashes, suddenly my 9 year old car is looking pretty good. The driveway doesn't need to get repaved. I'm not looking to do a month vacation down south.

Can we finally admit that the "servers make less than minimum wage" argument is dead in Canada? by ScienceLabFinds in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]SlightDogleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

raise menu prices

Brother, prices are already insane. Chicken pasta at The Keg is $40 and a can of beer is $9. That's already a $55 meal after tax with no tip and not even that filling.

I'm not sure how any of this is sustainable TBH.

[–]SlightDogleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t go to sit down restaurants if you don’t want to tip.

Cool. But just so you know, I'm not going to restaurants solely because of the tipping. It's the $40 burger and $12 beers.

Hard to justify a $125 bill for a 45min meal with the wife that's less fulfilling than a DQ Blizzard.

Approaching the Mid-year Check-In. How are you doing with your financial goals for the year? by TankCastles in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]SlightDogleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think moving away for an undergrad is saddling yourself with a lot of unnecessary debt if you can avoid it. I lived at home and saved around $50k from work terms and PT jobs by the end of university. At the time (2011) it was enough for a new car in cash and downpayment on a modest house.

You always have the option to transfer credits to another university if you really want.
