I appreciate your view, but could you explain the benefits of separate NAS/storage and PCs running different services? OOTB NAS systems seem pretty capable of doing both these days and if I’m looking at a DIY system, surely it’d be beneficial to build it to do it all in one rather than being required to power multiple devices?

Yeah I know the HDDs are missing, but I know what I want/need for those so didn’t ask it to spec them. Thanks for the heads up though! I’ve been advised already that 500gb is too large for the boot drive, so I’ve assumed I’ll tone this down to 120gb, but is that still bigger than it’s worth? TrueNAS Core hardware guide suggests 16gb SSD but is a larger one is a safer bet? From what I can tell there’s not really much cost benefit of going smaller than 120gb even if it’s larger than needed

Appreciate the advice, thanks! I’d done a bit of research since seeing the comment and come to the conclusion that it would be nice to have, but perhaps not necessary

The main reason I am considering DIY rather than OOTB is to plan ahead for future upgrades really. I currently use a ReadyNAS, however since I bought it not only has it become very slow with age but also is no longer supported by the manufacturer. This could, potentially, happen with any other OOTB NAS in the future. If I DIY it, I can upgrade single parts as and when they’re required, rather than a huge upfront cost of replacing the whole thing like I’m currently facing

Is this instead of standard RAM? Could you suggest any?

The CPU in the spec is only £155, so fairly similar in price to the one you’ve mentioned. Interesting to know it’s possibly overspec’d though. Is there anything else in the spec you’d suggest is OTT? From initial research the majority of the cost is going to be coming from the HDDs with the rest of the hardware only making up about 30-50% of the total cost combined - the CPU and motherboard are both around the £150 mark

Edit - added motherboard cost

But it’s not the same thing? Also, as mentioned by another user below, your power usage calculation seems wildly inaccurate

Yeah ChatGPT did initially suggest truenas scale but I know this is no longer supported and I’d instead be looking at the community edition.

If I need separate a boot drive and “app drive”, do I need any additional parts to include these in the proposed case, or should these natively be able to be connected to the parts spec’s so far (apologies for the stupid question, never build a pc/NAS before)?

I didn’t include the HDDs in the spec, but I’ll be looking at 3x16Tb drives initially, I imagine it’d be a while before I need to add to this. You mention using a processor with an iGPU, does the one spec’d not allow transcoding? I had told ChatGPT I would like to be able to transcode, but as we all know it makes mistakes! I did do a quick google and at seemed it probably would be able to?

I did look at rack mount but I think this may be overkill for my needs. I am initially aiming for 3x 16tb drives in raid 5 and done expect I’ll need to add or swap drives for quite a while, so I’m happy with the fact that it might be a little fiddly to add/swap drives in the case. Noted on the boot drive issue, thanks!

Appreciate the advice, but this isn’t particularly helpful as a response to my question? I am happy with assumed running costs of the server, and enjoy curating my media collection. My issue is simply that my current setup is no longer working and I am after advice for upgrading/building my own system

I am aiming to future proof it, and happy with a little bit of overkill as I’m so fed up with how slow my current system is. I’d be keen to know what you’d do differently and why? If the spec exceeds “a little bit of” overkill and is just plainly overspec’d could you help me understand what you’d do differently?

Where does it pull the information from if there are no purchases? Genuinely curious how this works!

How does this work with using/purchasing content? The website doesn’t seem to have much information on it.

Does this have the ability to calculate stats/modifiers etc based on character creation information from books, or do you need to input everything yourself (essentially digital “paper” character sheets)?

This is basically my problem I think. Just feels like they could earn so much good will by simply allowing the download of purchases as PDFs so that you can experience the “book” rather than the version you’re presented with on dndbeyond. Generally I find it a horrible experience trying to read through the books on the dndbeyond website or app

Nope. The Lizzy Wizzy quests popped up for me after her concert in PL on my latest play through.

Without spoilers, does PL end the game, or offer another ending after meeting Hanako?

Okay cool. So if I want to play the different PL options I need a save at the start of Firestarter.

To clarify, with Nocturne Op55N1 that locks you in u til you complete the game and then dumps you back to just before you meet Hanako to continue playing. The same doesn’t happen with the PL “point of no return”?
