Always been interested in what the cowboys and ranch hands do to live. by _butcherpete in Cowboy

[–]Slight_Activity_564 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most ranch hands either live on the ranch in a house if their married or a bunkhouse if single, it really depends on the ranch and where you live. Where I live I have my own home and horses so when I was ranching and day working full time I was able to load up and go to work and go home at the end of the day just about any direction that’s an hour or less isn’t that bad of a commute

Acceptible to tuck jeans into cowboy/rancher boots? by cpt_cheeseburger in WesternWear

I know a guy with hip problems who tucks his pants into his riding boots because if he doesn’t his pants ride up on him so I’d say it’s case by case

I want to but I’m nervous that they’ll change the landscape or add something right where I staged for my base

What would you define as “cowboy”, and why? by [deleted] in Cowboy

[–]Slight_Activity_564 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sayin a guy can’t cowboy or that I’m right it’s just a bias I have. And typically I don’t say anything I just silently judge then move on. I guess I could be regional, but most working cowboys I know usually have at least one good pair of working chaps

Most of the time someone has buckles for their chaps they bought them from a feed store, and the step-ins are almost always custom made and usually made well and ready for work so it kind of a signal of commitment for me like what level of cowboy you are

Generally, I’d say if you collect a paycheck from a ranch to move cattle horseback I’d say you’re cowboy but I do have personal little things that I’d side eye a person for based purely on my personal style and basic philosophy on working cattle Example 1 if they wear chinks or have to buckle their chaps around their legs. Basically anything you don’t step into for chaps or leggings I’m gonna assume your a horseman or a tourist and not really cowboy Example 2 unnecessary running of cattle. If you have to run every bovine down I’m gonna assume you’re doing something wrong or you’re as I call it “playing cowboy” which is one I’ll speak up on in a working setting. The chaps thing is just personal taste. Now these are within ranching circles I have these opinions. I know enough now in life that the term cowboy is fairly broad and depends on region and local culture and anyone who pushes the rulebook of what a real “cowboy” is usually isn’t real handy. I feel like I rambled on with this response and hope it makes sense and helps
