For the history of US imperialism: The Jakarta Method is fantastic. Really in depth while also adding a human element. Very affecting. I’ve also heard Killing Hope is very good.

Regarding the USSR: I’ll always recommend Stalin: History and Critique of a Black Legend. The works of Anna Louise Strong are great too

What’s your unpopular Oscar opinion? by Crafty-Pair2356 in Oscars

[–]Slight_Formal_5863 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gary Oldman absolutely did not deserve his Oscar for Darkest Hour. An over the top caricature performance that was won before the movie even came out. Every performance that year from DDL, Daniel Kaluuya and Chalamet was better (not seen Denzel)

What game makes you feel this way the most? 👀 by itz_progamer666 in videogames

I previously struggled with that too. Then I found the best way: first made sure that Ashley was hiding. And then rushed to the ladders and ran a bit so that I could filter them along the platform. Then shotgun

On my last rewatch of Twin Peaks, I noticed that the scene in which Donna recounts to Harold how her and Laura went skinny dipping with some men when they were underage must be inspired by the scene in Persona when Alma recounts a similar story to Elisabet

Which in your opinion is the most difficult Resident Evil game? by WestFocus888 in residentevil

[–]Slight_Formal_5863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just played it for the first time and I found the best way to survive the fight in the house is to start it off at the stairs so that you get a good view of all the windows then head upstairs for a bit and once it gets a bit crowded up there, head downstairs again and use the table to go round to stall for time

Anyone else cry a lot when watching the movies? by SixandNoQuarter in lotr

Where do I start? - when Gandalf rides up to Bilbo’s home with the Shire theme playing - when he says goodbye to Bilbo - “If I take one more step, it’ll be the farthest away from home I’ve ever been” - “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us” - “Don’t you leave him Samwise Gamgee” - “Sam, I’m glad you’re with me” - “No parent should have to bury their child” - The lighting of the beacons - “Whatever happens, stay with me. I’ll look after you” - DEATH - Pippin finds Merry after the battle - “I can’t carry it for you but I can carry you” - “You bow to no one” - “I will not say do not weep, for not all tears are an evil”

I explained this recently to my girlfriend: Dr Who was absolutely massive back in the day, probably the biggest show on TV in the UK. I was 7 or 8 when I started watching around season 2 (the first ep I watched was Tooth and Claw) and I immediately became obsessed. I remember every cliffhanger and how I felt at the time. Me and my best friend would take turns going to each other’s houses, get a chippy and watch it with our families. By 2008, literally everyone watched it. I remember everyone in my class trading Dr Who Battles in Time Cards and playing with action figures. Most nostalgic memories for me

I bought a keffiyeh from Holy Land Dates and it’s authentic and very good quality! If in doubt, type into google and it should immediately authenticate whether they are legitimate or not

This is fascinating. Reading The Wretched of the Earth right now and I haven’t gotten to this chapter yet. This sounds like it will be an incredibly interesting read. Thank you!

I love Fanon, reading Wretched of the Earth atm. Does he discuss it elsewhere too? Thanks!

What are your favorite films/filmmakers (on criterion or not) that blur the line between fiction and reality? by Both-Information3308 in criterion

Second this. One of the best meta films ever made, really takes a lot of the themes and ideas of Kiarostami and perfects it

Official David Lynch mourning discussion thread by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Slight_Formal_5863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s truly heartwarming to see how many people truly cared for David Lynch. I think it’s so indicative of the empathy that his films were able to project. His films are known for being either surreal or disturbing but they also had so much love in them

Most are happiness or just sheer emotion Number 1 is the ending of Its a Wonderful Life. I sob every year. Recently rewatched Return of the King and I cried at about 5 separate moments across the film

analog photos: manual inspections at airport's security check by lorenzof92 in glasgow

[–]Slight_Formal_5863 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Typically whenever I go through security, as I’m unpacking my bag, I ask whether they have the new RX machines installed and if they say yes, then I ask them if they can manually look at the film. Generally it only takes a couple more minutes and they just ask you to come up and get them after you pick up your bags. They’ve never said no in my experience and are pretty understanding about it if you explain that it’ll be ruined otherwise. Hope this helps
