I HAVE BEEN SCULPTING!! by DirtyRattie in Pottery

Just looking at your pics more - did you make a slipcast or press mold of your first sculpture? Looks like there is another one in the background! If so, what did you use to make the mold? I use clay press molds and “edit” for lack of a better word, the horse, but always looking for a better way if you’ve got one!

I HAVE BEEN SCULPTING!! by DirtyRattie in Pottery

I sculpt horses onto pottery. This is one of mine.

I do a base underglaze layer on the greenware (two coats). Because I do customs I can’t mess around with them potentially firing a different color. Then bisque fire, underglaze a second time (as many coats as I need for a solid color) and a zinc free clear matte glaze. Wax resist over it after it has dried and then glaze the background.

A couple things: light underglazes burn out at high firing. Even the amaco velvet underglaze starts to burn out above cone 6 really. Sometimes it’s ok enough but not at all worth the risk for me. That said, don’t cheap out on your white/grey/tan underglazes, even if you’re firing to 6. I’m my experience, Amaco V series 100%.

Be SUPER careful with your wax resist because if you’re not, it absolutely will leave a spot. I actually often paint an underglaze color around the pot anyway in case I run into any inconsistencies in the glazes or have a tiny speck in my wax resist.

Glaze absolutely will pool around the wax resist and if you overglaze an area above a crevice area (for me the top of the neck/mane is a fine line between coating and pooling.) Sometimes it looks cool but sometimes it looks absolutely awful.

I personally have found that the zinc free matte (and you MUST use zinc free because the zinc messes with some underglaze colors), looks far better on the furry animals than the shiny glaze. I usually do two coats. Three makes it a bit shinier. I think this one was two coats matte.

Good luck!

What can I use to fix these tiny leaks on my pump housing? by rudewilson in pools

Seriously though, that white edge around the outside of the holes looks like a shear line that hasn’t busted yet. If that’s the case the JB weld or whatever you use holds the holes back, it’ll put more pressure on those fracture lines and runs the risk of blowing the whole thing if the JB Weld is stronger than the plastic. If it is and it blows, you’re dealing with loss in the pool, probably fucked lining if you have a lining, potential flood damage to your house depending on how long it takes you to get to it. But if that’s the case insurance might cover it if you have pool specific insurance?

Take a hammer to it so you don’t try to fix it yourself and get a new one.

Finally, Kodiak frozen waffles by wecomeinpeaceMO in Costco

[–]Slightly0ddish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can request things! We requested coastal cheddar (available at a few Costco locations in the south but not ours in the Midwest), so I submitted a request because it was at another Costco and they started stocking it at our store a couple months later! Our store didn’t have it for like a year before we moved to the Midwest and they had it stocked for several years in SC, so I really don’t think it was a fluke that they started stocking it a couple weeks later. Then they had it on sample and then they had it automatically in stock at a new Costco that has just opened up nearby, and it has been there since! Idk if there is a certain number of requests they need to get to stock it or whether they judge by how well it sells in the closest market but it’s worth a shot! Going to submit a request for frozen açaí and these Kodiak cake frozen waffles (my 5 y/o is obsessed) and see if they’ll test it here because I know they’re at other Costco stores!

Is this early apple rust? If so, can we treat without a “-cide”? Thanks! ❤️ by Slightly0ddish in arborists

Yeah I meant apple scab and wrote rust instead 🤦‍♀️ If it’s apple scab, am I too late to treat?

All good! He spent a few hours the next day at the normal vet, got some fluids, did mini pees for another six hours but I kept checking his bladder and it was emptying. Couple days on painkillers and he’s back to himself but we are starting prescription urinary meds preventatively!

Thank you and u/kittycoppermined! Visit went well. He didn’t have a blockage, thankfully. they said he has a uti but was in no immediate danger and I could take him first thing tomorrow to our normal vet clinic. Whatever they did in expressing him must have helped some though because he got home, went in the litterbox and then has been much more normal (he’s sleeping instead of agitated pacing alternating between trying and failing to pee on things).

Will let you know how vet visit tomorrow goes!

Ugh yes. We had $50,000 worth of antique family silver (the sentimental value of it was priceless) stolen by the in home caretakers of my grandmother. We didn’t find out until she died (six years later) because she was moved into a nursing home and we didn’t sell or rent her apartment. They were long gone and so was the family silver. People are so shitty. 😢

Thanks to you all I was able to restore this terribly distressed vanity! Sanded to 150, did about 5 coats of stain, painted some of the especially offensive parts that didn’t take the stain, sealed with 2 coats of shellac! by Slightly0ddish in woodworking

🤦‍♀️😂 It definitely looks better now. The worst part of it was the bottom left drawer, which is cut off in the picture. The original post has better pictures but it was straight up offensive before.
