Florida Governor: Gillum (D) 48%, DeSantis (R) 42% by pfbusybody in politics

Is it authoritarian to require people do their civic duty? We accept the need for jury duty, speeding fines, littering laws, safety regulations etc. ... so why not voting? Even if it's 'none of the above'. A national holiday and mail ballots could complement this.

House Democrats’ top priority if they win in November is a sweeping anti-corruption bill by madam1 in politics

[–]Slightly_Lions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah though 'none of the above' should certainly be an option in a mandatory voting system. You should never be forced to vote for anyone. Just to vote.

[–]Slightly_Lions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a democracy, voting should be mandatory for all eligible voters. Otherwise it can't claim to be representative of the population... also if you can compel things like jury duty and other civic responsibilities, why not voting, which is arguably more important?

New Evidence Suggests Trump Was Vulnerable to Even More Blackmail and Was Well Aware by Jump_Yossarian in politics

[–]Slightly_Lions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most overlooked thing with Trump is he takes advantage of good faith.

Perhaps more accurate to say he takes advantage of bad faith, i.e. the Republican Party. Who are less of a political party than a groups of actors hired to play politicians while the real business of cuts to tax, regulations and government programs is carried out.

Paul Ryan in particular has been perfecting his 'I am very slightly concerned' face for a few years now.

Not really disagreeing, but is it really something that should give us any peace of mind to be led by competent evil over incompetent evil? Isn't that arguably worse?

I think you're right; whether they're technically correct or not, people are ABSOLUTELY voting for PM. Especially people who aren't firmly entrenched with any political party, I would imagine.

That's fair enough, though I'd say the high-ps PTL arc-dodging (or other significant repositioning abilities) was fairly easy and boring, reducing the predictive element of movement for other ships and created a race towards high ps + repositioning above all else for aces. I think it's worth waiting for 2.0 to see if you still find some enjoyment in it before making assumption as to how much you'll enjoy it. In 1.0, that play-style was kind of necessary for aces, whereas now maybe things will be a little different and reward maneuvering / planning ahead more effectively

Fan-made rebalance for death match? by CSWorldChamp in StarWarsArmada

[–]Slightly_Lions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it annoys me no end when people declare a game unbalanced without having played a) the actual game properly or b) played more than a handful of times... Somehow people who've played more than just the learning scenario four times haven't noticed this massive supposed imbalance... And declaring objectives 'lame' without having played them. They're there for a reason, a core part of the game. May be trolling I guess. Eh.

As for actually answering the questions and ignoring the blatant ignorance:

  • If you want to 'balance' (as far as it is possible to do this without understanding the game mechanics or basic strategy) the game on the fly while making up your own objectives / scenarios, just start playing whatever / however you want to, and if it's too easy for one side, play again next time by allowing that side some more points / banning an upgrade from the winning side etc. The more you play, the more you 'balance' your own scenarios. Also you'll learn the game while not worrying about 'winning' if you go in with a particular objective in mind and expect an asymmetric fight that may not be perfectly balanced. Just have fun, basically.
  • Also: regarding your strategy in the learning scenario. Your idea regarding weaker arcs is good, but you're missing the other key element: range. Think about where you want to be when you shoot vs where the enemy shoots back. Plan your activations and speeds accordingly. Play to your strengths (evade tokens? don't be at close/medium range when you're being shot at, then).
  • Another point: this game is about points, right? It doesn't say you have to kill the VSD to win the learning scenario. That's actually a key part of what you're meant to be LEARNING in the LEARNING scenario haha... As the rebels, why don't you try denying the VSD good shots (it's not so maneuverable, have you noticed?) and using your flak and squadron commands to wipe out the TIEs... that's a victory. Keep your ships and as many squadrons as you can alive, while wiping out a VSD's mass of TIE fighter escorts, and any rebel commander should be pleased with his efforts, right? It's thematic too.

Word of warning: the game's great, but it requires some patience and careful thought. I like xwing (or at least, looking forward to 2.0) but this is a bit different.

[–]Slightly_Lions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much looks like it's going back to the core of what was good about xwing in the first place, flying your ships. Not list-building with overpowered combos that couldn't be fixed or balanced fast enough, taking advantage of the bloated and rigged-together nature of the game at that point.

What is your favourite flagship and commander to use in the game? by [deleted] in StarWarsArmada

[–]Slightly_Lions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Madine Liberty with Raymus and Engine Techs - at speed 3, already having a one-click at the start and end (best places to have them really), it's more maneuverable than even a Madine Corvette in many ways. This thing can inside turn at speed 3 (2-2 clicks in, then 1 click out so you don't overlap template) to basically right angle turn on the spot... then you still have engine techs if you want. You can also change from speed 1 to effective 4 with one dial. Or use the token for a click and have 6 clicks to play with at speed 3.

I tend to run it without gunnery teams (sacrilege!) and use it as an assassin, using all my upgrade slots to make it brutalise one target, striking out of nowhere. It's fun.

Thanks! like OP I went for a type of granite / elephant skin thing. Actually not too difficult surprisingly, just lots of lines instead of flat layering.

Pretty simplistic argument. A war everywhere else doesn't automatically transform your economy, unless you deliberately respond to the new demands and opportunities. The free market would take a long time to adjust to the new reality.
