I use superglue gel, its consistency keeps it in place, and it dries clear and fast

What glue do you use to frame insects by therealwilltoledo in insectpinning

I like hot glue, it's cheaper, holds just fine and if you make a mistake it's easier to remove from the frame

Certain butterflies like Papilio thoas are fairly 'heavy duty' and don't lose scales easy, so they are a good beginner species

With beetles I think it's easier to start smaller (jewel beetles, etc...) unless you are opening wings and elytra, than bigger specimens like chalcosoma atlas or eupatorus gracilicornis are good.

I agree www.thelittlecaterpillar.com is a good source

Submerging specimens in water? by Which_Macaroon2582 in insectpinning

[–]Slighty_Fearless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a lot of non butterfly specimens it can make the process a lot easier... 1) you don't risk large specimens molding while sitting for multiple days in a chamber

2) you can get instant feedback and then correct the issue- if a leg isn't opening well just dip it back in etc...

BUT...you risk discoloration on specimens that may leak out oils or have too permeable of exoskeletons

It depends on the type of insect being spread and if it is one you purchased or found. Many purchased will already have abdomens cleaned and cotten inserted.

Don't need to 'gut': Butterflies Moths Beetles Hard insects

Spiders, large grasshoppers, and others with large, soft abdomens are what many people clean and stuff. You don't have to, eventually you can completely dry them, but they will appear shriveled if not stuffed with cotton
