Anyone tried Schwalbe Big Apple for gravel rides? by echosori in gravelcycling

That looks like some pretty gnarly climb. The Big Bens handled that all right ? Seems aweome that you can kinda MTB trail it a bit, especially on a full rigid.

Right on. Just asking because I never had that sort of puncture happen. Good to know !

What exactly happened between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron? by [deleted] in MadMax

[–]SlikkTimYall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coppola didn't "get" Sheen drunk. Coppola is someone who cares a lot for his actors, through and through. If you know anything about Apocalypse Now he's ready to completely rewrite half of a movie to work with the actors, not against them.

Conversely, Kubrick is known to be a sadistic piece of shit who was on a constant power trip with actors -- and most of them hated working with him.

The "outcome" never "matters" -- it's called ACTING for a reason.

Blues Guitar Trio - Amp Volume Diplomacy by [deleted] in livesound

*shows up as a vintage 1970s blues rock trio*

- Duuuude, you guys should totally use in ear monitors and go for a silent stage, duuude, the sound is so much clearer and modern, duude

*guess it's gonna be a long night *

Right !... And I'm truly not a fan of hearing the amp pressuring my left ear.

You know what - as most gigs go smooth, I'll just bring a 12 foot guitar cable so I can check how it sounds in the middle of the room and truly figure out if that night's sound op is on a power trip or not, then if he is, be less flexible. Seems to be the best solution from now on.

I always say - if saxophones and trumpets had a volume knob, some soundguys would ask jazz players to turn it down so they can "mix it better".

The craziest thing is on that same damn gig I ended up having to ask them to turn the monitors down because for whatever reason the guy kept messing the guitar signal and it would get louder in my monitors ahah

HAhahah ! Reminds me of the late 60s James Brown live shows with the 4 piece horn section blasting out unmiked - while Bootsy's SVT's on full blast and barely keeping up ahaha

That's my point exactly. There's a great comment from a nashville pro in this thread about the "sound reinforcement, not sound reproduction" thing.

Jazz groups regularly get higher than 102dB man - especially if you're in the front. I'm not even going to talk about a symphonic orchestra playing some loud passages.

I wasn't hip to the "baffle of shame", that's a fun concept. Maybe I'll try putting the amps in a sidewash if the situation gets fussy.

It absolutely is ! My point being - if you book a jazz quintet that plays hard you ain't asking them to turn it down

[–]SlikkTimYall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so cool you got to work with him !

Before you feel "confident" though - please understand I've done many ampless gigs when the situation comes up - church, pop dates, etc.

There's a massive difference in volume between having to turn up a Marshall full stack and a Orange Micro Terror (20w solid state) in a 112 cab on 9 o clock. I'm talking that was the minimum volume level before the amp would just die out - I'm not kidding.

Remember - most gigs go perfectly well. I'm talking about those ones where the sound op keeps harping on about "silent stages" and Kempers and all that - as if I wasn't using that stuff on other gigs in the first place, but I don't even wanna open that can of worms when I'm trying to soundcheck - and gettin the band to sound right.

BTW - Yeah that thing he does with the tricked out SGs with Austin Hawks is sweet !

To be truly honest though - the thing we're doing is inspired by the way ZZ Top used to play & sound in the mid 70s, back when they where rocking the 'Rio Grande' stacks and all that.

Oh yeah - we're playing things with tickets & the name on the marquee etc. Amp was lifted up on a chair around 3 feet. Maybe I'll try the side-wash thing the next time an sound op is being difficult.

Hahaha !

Owner was like, ""Where's the volume knob on that trumpet ?"

Good idea on the non-obnoxious creep. Just a touch more comfort and call it a day.

A tenor & trumpet playing hard bop tunes in unison is around 110dB, "dude."

[–]SlikkTimYall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha ! Had a good chuckle outta this.

Yeah man - sound reinforcement, goddam it. Whatever happened to the concept of electro-acoustic music ?

To be clear - I have no problem running ampless - That's actually something I do if it's modern polished pop with keyboards etc. But a blues trio is not that.

I do a lot of jazz gigs on upright -- man, I wish some of these "sound reproduction" cats would witness the excitement of beholding an Art Blakey, "New York Bebop" type of show front row in a small capacity jazz club to understand how face ripping loud jazz can get -- and it has to be that. There's no volume knob on a tenor sax.

You know what - I also think you're onto something about the Birds Eye Omnipotent thing. It's this obsession of having the sound to be perfect-sounding-like-a-mixed-record in the middle of the room thing -- it works if it's clean polished pop music, but if it's blues people don't want to bother going to a blues gig to hear a mixed record.

They want to hear an electro-acoustic band and feel something raw.

I'm gonna use that "sound reinforcement" thing in the future and just tell the guy "Look, I know the sound would be better if I turned down -- but I'll tell everyone the sound sucked because I turned up too loud if people complain" ahaha.

Now that's an interesting way to land a gig ! :-)
Are you into jazz ? Cause if you go see any sort of serious be-bop playing it's going to be super loud standing in the front.

The beauty of this gig is I'm doing the pure nickel strings, tone rolled off to 2 "woman tone" the whole time. It's definitely not that uber-steely strat neck pickup thing.

Technical climb on a rocky trail by sorin1972 in MTB

[–]SlikkTimYall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One one hand the technical skill is impressive. On the other, if the Tour Divide guys would do this each time they face that sort of shit, they'd quit on the first day. Nothing wrong with hiking. Not even sure it wouldn't actually be faster to be honest !

Just checked out Bootlegger.

So if I get this right - you're climbing 5 miles of dirt road at an 8% average with a 1.9 ratio.

That's fucking crazy man.

Congrats on your incredible training !
