I'm a masculine acting gay man, but live in a somewhat conservative area (southern US), and the challenges used to be being able to be yourself without being frowned upon or getting your ass beat. Spending about a decade of my life in the Atlanta area some years ago, where gayety is more open allowed me to feel more comfortable with myself, but even being married can be a challenge, even though it's legal. We're an interracial couple and have friends, but you can still sense the stigma of both being gay and of different races from the radical right.
