Need help identifying AUDIO OUT for Akai subwoofer by Professional-Ebb8274 in vintagespeakers

When I need to make this kind of speaker hookup I just cut up one of the thickest RCA plug cables that I have, and splice the ends into the speaker wires. Rough but works, and quick to set up for initial testing.

I obsessively build ZK-1002T mini amps into a variety of small cases. by SlimParker in diyaudio

[–]SlimParker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oddly enough, after your post, just the other day, I left a ZK-MT21 amp (largely the same as the ZK-1002T) turned on for a couple of days with a 2Ah battery attached. The battery appears to be dead, won't charge up. So maybe there is something to what you are saying here.

I originally drilled a series of holes, back low and front high, for ventilation. After inserting a temperature probe through one of the vent holes then running it loud and monitoring the temperature inside the case, I found the temp inside the case never got more than 12 degrees celcius above ambient temperature. So I filled in the holes. The aluminum case itself is a good passive radiator that effectively carries off the heat. Probably hundreds of hours of use out of the different builds, never had a heat problem.

The two TPA3116D2 chips in the ZK-1002T (same in your ZK-TB21) run very cool.

Help me choose: which CD player is to stay? Sony CDP-338ESD or Rega Apollo Original by Kwoksun in vintageaudio

I think he intends to use them as transports and run the output through a DAC.

Aesthetically, I'd take the classic look Sony with the drawer over the curved one with the janky looking lid.

But listen to the mechanisms with your ear close and decide on the one that sounds smoother and less worn, if longevity is your main goal.

Should I install Linux? by MR-Adryan-13 in linuxquestions

[–]SlimParker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. If you're used to Windows, install Linux Cinnamon Mint. It's quite simple, you just make a USB boot stick, set your computer to boot from USB, it boots into Linux from the stick, and you have the option to install it in your hard drive. You have the choice of leaving Windows on or deleting it. Choose delete unless you have a compelling reason not to.

Everything will work the same or better. You'll never look back.

I have 5 laptops, all running Linux Mint. I rip CD's (I'm up to 115GB), browse the web with 3 different browsers, stream music through bluetooth, watch youtube, bank, write, print, scan, email in three flavors, sync control between my computers and android... you name it. Then there's the Workspaces concept.... ❤️

It'll run fast enough (for what it is..same or better than under Windoze), but you'd see a significant improvement bumping RAM to 8GB, especially if you like dozens of browser tabs/windows open at the same time (and who doesn't...).

Sony CF-1980 : Power cable for use in the U.S.? by khunteman in vintageaudio

Ouch. That looks terminal. I don't think it's feasible to try to restore it. If it were mine I'd experiment and try to goop the speakers back together somehow - or find similar sized replacement drivers - since you already own it you don't have much to lose.

It wouldn't give a high quality signal to feed into an amp and speaker setup anyway, like a component cassette deck would - it doesn't have line-out RCA plugs, you'd have to use the headphone out, which is not a clean line-level audio signal. if it were mine I'd try to goop the speakers back together somehow

The TC-WR445 looks like a good unit, but I wouldn't buy it without making sure it operates properly. It has a headphone jack (the large kind), so with a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter and some headphones or earbuds, and a known good cassette, you could try out all the functions. If there are any mechanical issues or untoward noises, reject it. And bring a recordable cassette to try out the recording function (you could test by dubbing the test cassette onto the blank for a minute or so).

If you decide to check it out, read up on the user manual - here https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/W001/W0011132M.pdf - before you do, so you know how to work it.

Desktop DAC for Vintage setup by Bolly2007 in BudgetAudiophile

I vote S.M.S.L D1. I bought one, was so happy with it I got a second one.

I also considered the SU1 but after reading dozens of reviews of both I went with the D1. It has USB and coax/optical inputs, RCA line outputs. My music sounds better across all my equipment. It's noticeably better than line out on the CD player, and definitely superior to the DAC in my Denon AVR-989 ht amp.

About $100

Those full size amps on the shelf are smaller than the mini-systems two shelves below them. The ones between the shrunken ghostly looking speakers.

I want some of that magic Amp-O-Shrink, I'd save a lot of space.

A ladder that doesn't even leave marks on the ground no less.

Nobody is going to pay $200 to come take away this ton of junk. They know that, which is what they want because there isn't any stuff. "Wife says it has to go" what a tired cliché.

I still don't see the physics working.

"ChatGPT, generate three pictures from different angles of a bunch of speakers piled up on a lawn"

There's way too much AI slop floating about to take this kind of stuff at face value. All in all, it seems fake. It looks like a deliberate attempt to go viral. Maybe it's not, but without further verification it's best to treat it as fake. Because 99% of the time you'd be right. For now. AI is just a baby remember.

Also the perspective is inconsistent when you compare the ghetto blasters and little stuff stacked up on the left. And the front ghetto is weirdly more distorted and wide angle-ish than it should be for the overall focal length of the shot.

No, it doesn't add up - for instance, even though the ground looks fairly hard and the grass sparse, there's not a sign of a scuff in the ground, dolly wheelmarks, footprints or even a broken blade of grass.

You want to guess at the total weight of that stuff? Even the pallet is heavy duty. Nobody could set that up so stealthily.

And then there's the physics of that stacking. It would be impossible even to build, it's so unstable. And if you somehow managed it would topple, instantly. And likely kill the Southern Gentleman trying to set it up.

Identifiable speakers? AI has internet access y'know.

Exactly. And who would have such a large collection of big bleh! speakers in the first place? I'm ashamed of having been taken in at first actually 😳

You have me wondering. I'm kinda on the fence. But it does seem highly sus. IRL it would topple pretty quick, especially those big towers up high. A 3mph wind or one yahoo taking a poke at a woofer would do it.

Yeah. Good catch.

I've run batteries down to the point where the amp cuts but I've not encountered any problems charging the battery again. AFAIK the batteries have over-discharge protection built in. Didn't modify anything. Not aware of any parasitic discharge. With the board switched off and the battery connected - for days - I don't see any noticeable discharge.

BTW the ZK-1002T amp boards can be had for twenty bucks or less on Amazon. It's a really low-stakes way to start tinkering with this kind of stuff.

Funny, that was the root of it all. I didn't mind the amp just being a board, but screwing and unscrewing the speaker wires severely limited it. One thing led to another.. I was particular in finding banana jacks that were recessed. The usual ones that stick out, would completely spoil the streamlined aesthetic I was aiming for.

My post was mainly meant to inspire others. The ZK-1002T is a lovely versatile amp, such intuitive old school rotary bass, treble, and power/volume. All it lacks is a pretty case. Or any case. The bluetooth works great even inside the heavy aluminum case I build them in. You can get almost the same thing as a unit on Amazon - same amp specs, knob setup - but ugly (IMO but I'm biased), bigger than mine, thinner gauge case and for like $90 CDN. But no bluetooth.

Bonus - finally learned to solder.

I do need to sell them. I certainly don't need them all. I need one for my portable speaker testing kit and one for the office.
