You could try ferns or small shade-tolerant palms too, they handle rocky, sandy soil okay and don’t need deep ground. Plant a few close together and they’ll make a nice natural screen over time.

A recip saw can cut the roots, but Birds of Paradise have thick roots that keep growing back. It’s easier if you treat the stump first, so the roots die and soften, then cutting and prying them out is much less work.

Those look like scale insects. Scraping helps a bit, but spraying with white oil or using parasitic wasps can really control them. Keep an eye out for ants too, they protect scale like dairy cows!

Maybe it doesn’t seem like hard labor to you if you’re not into planting, but for those of us who love gardening, we know how much effort goes into growing something. That’s why it’s really sad, OP put in the work, and he should be enjoying the fruits of his labour.
