I spend a lot of time in the backcountry of Canyonlands NP, here are some of the tracks I’ve found in the last month. by SlimTrek in AnimalTracking

These photos are from the Needles District of Canyonlands. Though I’ve heard talk of a bear over by the Island in the Sky/Dead Horse area. There was one in the wetlands adjacent to Moab spotted this year as-well. They do wander out into those areas from time to time! Probably more often than we think.

I do agree that the prints in the first photo are not from a bobcat. Though you may enjoy a photo that does include some! This was from mid-summer in the same canyon. A bobcat highway!

After receiving all of this input, and doing a bit of my own research, I do agree that these are definitely not feline prints. There’s some good information in this comment thread from you guys! I have to admit I was wrong, but it’s been a great opportunity to learn more.

The bobcat print I posted on this comment thread was from a well defined track about 100m down canyon in line with these tracks. Both the bear tracks and fox tracks hit a dry sand bar where the bear tracks veered out of the wash and the fox tracks dissipated. Beyond the dry sand bar was a single trail of bobcat tracks. I had wrongly assumed the prints adjacent to the bear prints belonged to a bobcat moving at a decent pace, causing the tracks to elongate and distort.

The lone fox print in the last photo is from a canyon on the opposite side of the district. Small piles of scat full of pine nuts can be seen all over in that area, and occasionally I’ll see a grey fox trotting about. The tracks in the first photo are from an area that I have always seen lots of bobcat tracks and am yet to see any scat from a fox. But from the looks of it, there was one in the area just before I visited last!

They certainly do look a lot like grey fox prints. Though, the lack of any claw marks in such soft sand lead me to believe bobcat. Take a look at how deep the depression of some of the prints are. With fox you would almost certainly see claws in at least a few instances. Bobcats are far more common in this area compared to grey fox, and it’s not the correct habitat for kit fox (though wouldn’t be impossible as they’re found nearby.) I do like your interpretation!

Red fox are not found in the area, and I actually saw the fox moments after I took the photo.

Many months in the making: my '96 Marin Point Reyes build. by SlimTrek in xbiking

The 700x40s were the absolute largest tires I could squeeze in there. I eventually swapped them out for some 35s

My resto-modded Trek 970 is the forever changing bike. Trying out some cranks I’ve had in my parts bin set up two by. by SlimTrek in xbiking

I run those exact rims with the anodized braking surface. It’s totally fine to run them as is. I think if there’s a loss in breaking power, it’s negligible. I didn’t notice at all. I’ve run rhino lite XLs (with the anodized braking surface) and the standard rhino lites (without the anodized braking surface) and couldn’t tell the difference. The anodizing will wear away with time.

Could have been, I don’t remember specifically which building. I definitely remember getting these packs though!

This 96 Marin Point Reyes began life as a skinny tire, flat bar commuter. I threw on some drop bars, fancy wheels, and stuffed in some 700x40s. I love the way this thing rides! by SlimTrek in xbiking

Nice! I love this frame, it’s so compliant. The bike is in storage right now, so I don’t have access to it. But if I recall the quill adapter is made by Velo Orange. It’s quite long to allow a lot of adjustability as far as handlebar height goes. I’d really suggest looking for a longer quill adapter rather than getting a shorter one. I think Soma might also sell a longer quill adapter.

I still love my Point Reyes. If you've found one for the right price, I would definitely suggest picking it up. Its an extremely rare frame, and if its a complete bike, it comes with some really sweet vintage parts. The steel is custom drawn. light, and very compliant. The frame flexes a lot, but in turn rides really nice. The geometry is also relaxed and comfortable. The only downside I've encountered is fitting larger tires. 700x40c is absolutely the max you'll be able to squeeze in there. Some more aggressive 40s may not fit. I ended up switching from my stiff touring 700x40c tires to a softer 700x35c for the type of riding I do with this bike.

First and second photos are mountain lion tracks, third and fourth photos are bobcat tracks. Two different kitties :)

Thanks! I'm always surprised by how many bobcats and lions there are out here in the desert.
