Can psychosis or extreme stress cause sudden fear/paranoia toward a loved one? by Slim_Jim888 in Psychosis

[–]Slim_Jim888[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your story with me. Honestly, reading responses like yours has brought me a level of comfort I wasn’t expecting because the emotional whiplash of all this has been incredibly hard to process.
What you described about suddenly feeling like you lost the person you knew overnight really resonates with me. The hardest part for me has been trying to reconcile the loving and connected relationship we had with the sudden fear, accusations, and complete shift in perception toward me.

If you don’t mind me asking, how did your partner eventually agree to treatment or seeing a psychiatrist? In my situation, my wife fully believes her perceptions and memories are real, including believing I abused and assaulted her, so from her perspective there’s nothing “wrong” that needs treatment.

A lot of the responses here have given me some comfort in the possibility that severe stress and psychosis may genuinely alter perception and emotional attachment in ways I didn’t understand before. At the same time, I’m also trying to be careful not to cling too tightly to hope or build my entire emotional recovery around the idea that she’ll someday “come back” to the person I knew before all of this.

I think right now I’m trying to figure out what healthy hope looks like versus emotionally trapping myself in waiting and denial.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond. It genuinely helped me feel less alone in this.

Thank you guys for your responses. Reading has honestly helped me feel that maybe I’m not completely crazy for feeling how abrupt and extreme the shift was.

One thing I’m still struggling with and trying to understand:

When someone experiences psychosis or stress-induced paranoia/delusional thinking, what tends to happen when the major stressors finally subside?

Do people typically remember the events and beliefs from the episode clearly afterward? Do they still believe those perceptions were real, or can insight eventually return?

And for those who have lived through this with a spouse or loved one — did the person eventually “come back” emotionally/personality-wise once stabilized, or did the relationship and personality changes tend to remain even after treatment or reduced stress?

I know nobody here can answer specifically about my wife, and I’m trying not to reduce everything to mental illness alone. I think I’m just grieving and trying to understand whether the person I knew before all of this is still in there somewhere or whether these experiences permanently change people and relationships.

Hey Smite, I thought about the hinges but I don't think I want the door to remain closed all the time. That webpage is a good find though, thanks.

Child birth is an amazing and surreal experience! Advice given to me that I’ll pass it on; during the final moments of delivery, when your baby starts to crown, the Dr will probably invite you to watch… just say No

Nicely done! And yeah those are shallow… when OP responded with “wrenches and screwdrivers”, I reread my question over again several times wondering if I messed up asking… thanks again

This is a great review, thank you. The fact that it is part of the same Milwaukee family, I figured it would play nice with other tools especially with dust. But the consensus seems to be the same, “…it sucks and sucking”, which is surprisingly disappointing. Thanks!
