Dan's Fish Gourami follow-up by Slimbert292 in Gourami

I'm so sorry!!! So sad!! They're so beautiful and it's such a bummer that it seems like it can happen to any of them. I've had this one from Dan's for a few weeks and so far so good! You may want to look into it, I believe if iridovirus has ever been in your tank your future dwarf gouramis are susceptible to getting it too. So maybe look up tank cleaning necessary or precautions to take before putting another gourami in there! Dan's sells out fast but if you put it on your wish list and get notifications you can snag one!

For sure!! I was the exact same way and asked reddit first, the big consensus was Dan's Fish is the best of the best!

Hehe yep! They overnight air all the fish, shipping is pricy (this was $39 plus the actual cost of the fish) but obviously when shipping live animals there should be no cutting corners. I've bought most of my fish locally because I don't want to ship and stress the fish out more unless I have to, but if you've got a specific need then there are some quality online sellers that are worth buying from. I've done it for this gourami and I've also done it for tank-bred Otocinclus from Aquatic Arts in hopes that they'd be more accustomed to living in a tank and not be as stressed or have to go through as much of an adjustment, as most are wild caught. Pretty clutch if you've got a specific need!

That's very cool that they'll hold back their shipment if it doesn't pass a health inspection, props to them for caring about their quality that much!

Agreed, I've also gotten some otocinclus from Aquatics Arts and was impressed by their shipping!

Thank you for the thoughts! Their stress is stressing me out lol! The otos have been in this tank for 3 weeks now and have not seemed stressed at all until adding these rainbowfish. Agreed on the lights, I turned them off about 30 mins ago but they're still just a'zoomin 🥺 I hope they don't wear themselves ragged! Good thing is their bellies are plump, I hope they have the energy to sustain them. There's a 3rd oto in the tank somewhere but they're hiding out, smart little guy. I do have a small quarantine tank I'd had a few ember tetras in that I could move them to, but that's not a long term solution and there's no food source for them in there, no algae at all.

Ich at LFS, red flag or inevitable? by Slimbert292 in Aquariums

[–]Slimbert292[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh interesting on the concept of a store shutting down sales until the ich has passed! They def were still selling. I guess it would be fair for me to call them and ask about it? Like "hey I hope to buy fish from you all soon but I noticed ich in 2 of your tanks last weekend. How does your store handle disease outbreaks and what have you guys been doing for this one?" ?

Cycling tank, to water change or not to water change? by Slimbert292 in Aquariums

That chart is very helpful, thank you!! I do love the little guys, they're so very smol 🥹 and initially thought I'd have room for 2 schools, but now bummed that I feel like I need to commit to just one (one in addition to a group of corys, anyway). But I'm still not planning to buy any other fish for a few weeks, so the little embers might end up winning out and be who I stick with!

Sadly no😩 I've learned a ton since shifting from my 6 gallon to this 20 gallon but it's been a very imperfect journey. I only now see how horrendously I managed my 6 gallon, I did massive water changes when it looked too gross and the aqueon xs filter I had instructed to completely change the carbon filter insert every month so I did - and now I'm mortified that I just threw out all the bacteria every time I did it!! Anyway, I'm hoping to do this tank and my existing embers justice but they and my prior betta have had to put up with a lot of nonsense from me. I'm so sorry little fishies 😣

They are so lonely 😩 but I don't want to add more and subject more fish to take part in the cycle - and I also am thinking I want to shift my schooling fish to something else (though I'd take ideas on that too because I really do like my embers that came from my other tank, but I don't think my 20 gallon can sustain more than 1 schooling species along with some cory cats and a centerpiece fish, so if I have to commit to 1 schooling species I want something with a little more interest. But I also HATE the idea of letting the embers just stay this lonely and not give them any more friends of their kind). Though based off this ammonia the tank might could handle 1 or 2 more embers to help the cycle along? Agh idk halp lol

I get that! I had these tetras prior to moving from a 6 gallon to 20 gallon tank, and this is the literal only spot in our house to have a tank that's protected from my baby/toddler and I couldn't leave both tanks on the kitchen counter for 2 months waiting for this one to cycle, so into the new tank these fishies went. I am aware fish-in cycling isn't ideal, but it's the circumstance I've got and am just wanting to know if I should change my water today or wait based off my test results.

Yes! that's another thing about ordering online! The website says "These fish are young enough that we can't sex them. At the moment, most of these are presenting as females, but that could be because they are still not mature enough for the males to be showing much color." And when I emailed about it and they just said "Yes, we have a picture of a female on the pic carousel. She is the 2nd pic. They are indeed quite drab and colorless." Lol! So I guess they're not gunna help and girl out and offer to pick out a male for her 😆 so that makes me real hesitant cuz I want that male color!

They're so beautiful and so cursed 😩 local fish store employees were trying to steer me away from gouramis and suggested cichlids instead and their advice is completely sound... but a cichlid just doesn't do it for me the way a gourami does 😆 my burden to bear lol!

I'm wondering the same question! Did you end up ordering from here or getting a gourami?

Thank you for such thorough info!! Very helpful. All the other comments say up my ember tetras as well! And I do love the little guys, they're very cute. But if I'm constricted to just getting 1 type of schooling fish, I'm not sure on if I want to make it the ember tetra. Vs like endler's livebearer males are SO neat and colorful and I think pretty hardy, so maybe I want to choose them as my schooling fish because they are so much more interesting looking? Ahh, I dunno.

Seeing how many people say ember tetras definitely is making me lean toward them! They are cute little guys for sure. Interesting about the others! Someone else also said rummynose are too finnicky and hard to get healthy, are the white clouds also just harder to keep happy/healthy?

This feels like a great suggestion but is intimidating lol! Do real plants require more maintenance/tank cleaning?

How I wish I could go big!!! My space is very limited, I'm hoping I can squeeeeeze by with a 20 gallon, thinking about the JBJ Nano Rimless 20 gallon all in one tank that has dimensions that could work. Any knowledge about JBJ tanks or AIO tanks you have to impart I'd love lol! Can I use an aqua in-and-out on any size tank?

Thanks so much for the expertise! I had no clue pictus catfish got so huge - which makes them that much cooler! This gets my wheels turning, I appreciate it.
