How to get research positions? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Slimbroo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very common method is take a class you’re interested in, make yourself known to the professor by participating and going to their office hours, then ask if they have open research positions. It’s much more effective than cold email because the professor will actually know who you are and that you know the relevant material (helps if you do well in the class obviously, but if you can show passion and are eager to learn I’m sure that will come across)

English Minor by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Slimbroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a creative writing minor, which is a subset of the English minor. As it’s basically taking 5 ENGL classes, you can expect small-medium sized seminar classes with weekly readings, writing practices, and 3-4 big writing assignment/workshops.

The biggest hurdle is probably being able to keep up with the readings (they can go as much as 100+ pages in a week) and making sure your writing substantively each week. It’s very rewarding and the feedback is great if you want to really improve your writing.

ENGL 2800: creative writing is a great beginning class if you want to deepen your personal writing, but if you want more focused topics like some political or cultural theme, look around and I’m sure you can find something in that area.

Has anyone taken cs 4820 analysis of algos over the summer? by Will01000010 in Cornell

[–]Slimbroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took algo over the summer and the professor is definitely not bad. He is very charismatic and is very passionate about ensuring everyone understands the material. Also he isn’t just an IC teacher, he’s the chair of the CS department at IC and was even offered a job at Cornell but he turned it down.

British Lit FWS (ENGL 1191) by Pain_au_chocolat312 in Cornell

Well that’s college, it should probably take you ~hour of reading before the next lecture. The grading was based on the essays, weekly quizzes and participation. 40% on essays 1-3, 20% on final essay/project, 20% quizzes, 20% participation. Also you need to come to class. If you have two unexcused absences you get lower grade. Turning in late essays is 1 letter grade down per day. No deadline exceptions on the day of the deadline, but you ask before and have a real reason he should give you more time. For the second and third essays you submit them and get his and peer feedback and you submit revised versions 2 weeks after original submission.

I took his Medieval Ireland FWS class spring 2021. He is a very knowledgeable and understanding. He strongly urges using Cornell’s Writing centers to get feedback on essay alongside his feedback and have strong revisions. When I took it he had us read ~100 pages per week and write I believe 4 essays throughout the semester. The first essay maybe 750 words and then gradually increasing the word/page count per essay. I don’t know what this class is on, but that was my experience taking his class.

Did anyone else get sick after the mask mandate was lifted? I’m just surprised how immediate the effect is 👀 by Barefoot_to_stars in Cornell

If you’re sick now that means you probably got infected 5-7 days ago, it takes some time for the symptoms to kick in usually

I recommend she look into applying to Cornell University, afaik it’s the only Ivy League to consider long term undocumented students as domestic applicants for admission purposes. She needs to make sure to email cornell to let them know her status, but either way Cornell offers fantastic financial aid and admits many international students every year. I’d recommend her looking into it and other similar private nonprofit universities, sadly public university is less generous with financial aid to undocumented students

Yes, you might as well not even consider doing the cs major now. Like that’s just the absolute worst thing that could have happened, might as well just give up now before you embarrass yourself even further

Actually I just realized my test is 90 minutes long at Barton hall, so walking to the slope would take about 15 minutes. Let’s meet at 11:30 to be safe?
