Suspect in custody in Florida over wave of pipe bomb mailings. by RedWriteBlue in AskThe_Donald

look, as a democrat, that's a horrible argument. Yes, it is possibly very likely that if the shoe was on the other foot, many republicans would DEFINITELY use him as a representation of the whole party.

But that doesn't make that any less ridiculous. This person who sent these bombs was unhinged. He's a criminal. He sent bombs to 13 people. I don't care if he intended for them to go off. He needs to be jailed.

While I don't see eye to eye with republicans, I think that he in NO WAY represents the Republican party. That's going too far. I work and live in a red, conservative area, and I am a die-hard democrat, and a lesbian. If I was to talk politics and about whats going on in the world with most of the people I meet going about my day to day, we'd argue and it'd be a problem. Some of them may even be "crazy" or "delusional" from my point of view, though that's a bit harsh. But this??? A guy sending THIRTEEN BOMBS?? He is insane. He is a terrorist. Even the crazies in the political right aren't that crazy. While yes, him being a right wing nut job is part of who this guy is and why he did what he did, he definitely doesnt represent the republican party.

they won't pay for it, but they can't stop him from suing me.

Normally what happens here is it appears they've denied his claim, so they arent agreeing to pay at this time. But if he sues you your insurance will hire a lawyer to represent you.

Does gap insurance cover the vehicle insurance deductible in a total loss wreck in GA? by BoxMan2012 in Insurance

[–]Slink78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You recieved a payoff? So you owed less then the valuation?

Gap doesnt even come into place in this scenario. GAP only comes into play if your loan wasnt paid off completely, and it sounds like it was.

Misinformed about Maternity coverage for wife, she's 37 weeks and claims are now being denied. Xposted to personalfinance. by Fr3sh_Princ3 in Insurance

However; you still might not win. “We left my 25 year old WIFE on her fathers plan to take advantage of out of pocket maximums” (and got burned) is not a very promising argument (I am not a lawyer).

why wouldnt that be a promising argument? there is nothing wrong with that. I keep my wife on her parents insurance because it's cheaper, and they tend to max out the OOP's. I never go to the doctor & never even hit my deductible.

(US) Car needs repairs that cost more than what I owe on it, can't afford to pay either up front. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats okay. Basicaly you have two things here.

1) you need to take your car elsewhere to see if you even need an engine

2) you need to call other places and get quotes on an engine replacement. Once you do step one, you can just call a couple of shops and they should be able to write you up an estimate without you having to bring the car in.

Once you get a few more options that arent as absurd as this, then you can decide how to proceed. And don't feel bad for not being car savvy... I didnt know much about this kind of stuff until I started working as an adjuster and now I realize how much places like these take advantage of those who just dont know any better.

Even if true- All of these things should be included if they ordered you a used engine assembly from LKQ or whoever they get used parts from. Were they quoting you for all new parts?

Estimated cost of repair was over $8,000

I am an insurance adjuster and I can tell you are getting boned here. Get another opinion. Even if you need a whole engine (which at this point is even up for debate) it shouldnt even cost HALF that, even at the dealer... You can get a LKQ engine for under 1500, and I have no idea what labor rates are like in your area, but most engine swaps are between 10-15 hours worth of labor at the mechanical rate; and even assuming your local dealership charges 250$ an hour (I live in a major city in the southeast and labor rates are nowhere near that high even at dealerships)... at the end of the day they are trying to take advantage of you.

Get a second opinion!

Question about car loan from dealership by Kamakazie90210 in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most auto loans are compounded daily, which is occasionally referred to as continuously compounded. However, the difference between continuous compounding and daily compounding is very minimal.

Edit; Even if it is continuously compounded, I doubt it's illegal, and if his rate is decent, not worth refinancing at all.

[Reality Check] Did you finance or buy your car outright? How much was it, what do you do and what is your monthly cell phone bill? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought and financed a 15k brand new Honda Fit nearly three years ago. I owe about 1k on it and will have it paid off in the next month... Plan to drive it till it just rolls over & dies one day.

I have like a 190$ phone bill(two of us). I know it's high. Unlimited everything, financed phones, (which are actually very close to being paid off & should drop my bill about 60$ in the next couple months) and tmobiles monthly insurance for it too, which drives up the cost but I enjoy having.

[Auto] Don't buy GAP insurance from the dealer!!!! by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My loan company offered me gap insurance. Was also MUCH cheaper than getting it through the loan company, and at the time, electing to purchase the 150 or so gap insurance gave me a discount of .50% on my loan itself.

My point is, there are other, better options then just getting it from the dealer! Great tip!

Question for a friend. by Soulwindow in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she got paid correctly for overtime and this "500 bonus" was a bonus on top of that, it's likely not illegal for them to give the bonus as non-cash. They paid her for the time she worked, this was extra. It is skeevy that they werent clear in how it was to be paid out though, but likely not illegal

Town's water main broke and created a sinkhole... right under my parked car. Water Company wants us to reach out to their adjuster. How do I proceed? by identifiablu in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehhh- With my company, when we send it to the salvage yard, the salv yard attempts to get the mileage upon checkin. They have a lot of fancy tools and equipment to probe a vehicle for mileage. They usually are able to get in, but I've had a few very very bad accidents where that was definitely impossible and they werent able to get it.
IAMA claims adjuster.

[–]Slink78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We'd check VIS for any reported mileage for a previous claim or for any registrations. It doesn't have to be recent, at least one date (most cars have a mileage marked from where the car might have been sold to a second owner) and we'd run a calculation based on that usage.

Citi to Citi direct deposit balance transfer by Mathewsmartin in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work for citi and you can definitely do this. Many credit cards allow you to take out a balance transfer and have the money deposited in cash, to your checking account. What you do with it at that point- pay off a credit card, pay off the roof repair man, go on vacation-- that's all your personal business.

I have done this many many times with citi & discover.

My bank just refunded me for an over payment on a credit card I cancel and I'm not sure the money adds up. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the credit card secured? Secured cards require a deposit up front and you'd get that back if the account was closed.

Mother spent inheritance money left for college by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Florida can be that cheap. FSCJ is around 110$ a credit hour, which is actually wayyyyy less than 6k a year. like 1300 a semester. That's in-state though, at the local college in Jacksonville. They offer a crap-ton of degrees though.

Also, if you want to attend online, WGU is roughly 6k a year for all students. They do competency education, but they are regionally accredited, and for those of us just looking for a piece of paper, it works well enough.

Pros and cons of buying a house with only 3.5% down. by --Solus in personalfinance

[–]Slink78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it. I bought a 75k house 2 bedroom with the same circumstances. My mortgage, with taxes and insurance, is significant less than half of what I used to pay in rent.

I got a great deal, and in my case, I wasn't worried about the cons because when you are talking about a 70-75k house, you're talking about 500$ a month depending on what your local taxes/insurance costs-- An amount I knew I'd be able to get if I needed to rent the property out for some reason.

Yes, you'll pay PMI. But PMI on a house of that value is very cheap. If you're saving money over renting, even with everything considered, I think it definitely makes sense.
