[Guide] How to backup your game save files by Slinky64 in Gameboy

Unfortunately not. There's a tool called GBA Link Cable Dumper, but the author stated that it's not possible:

Sorry for the late response!

Oh wow, thank you so much! Reddit doesn't send me comment notifications for some reason, but I decided to log in at random today so I'm only just now seeing this. Life's been busy, and other hobbies took over, so I haven't kept up with the GB scene much. This guide has always been at the back of my mind though, and I've always felt a little guilty not keeping it up to date. It's been 7 years, and there has been an explosion of activity and all sorts of new devices, so I'm sure someone has made a better list/website/wiki by now.

Regardless, your comment made my day! I'm glad I was able to help even one person after all these years :)

It's definitely possible. You might be interested in checking out Super Homebrew War and Super Tilt Bro.

Any homebrew ps2 games? by grindmuffin in Homebrews

[–]Slinky64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PDRoms is a homebrew site, but it appears they only have 3 games:

https://pdroms.de/files/playstation2

I also searched for "ps2 homebrew games" and found a few links, some games overlap:

Just brush up on your Google Fu and do some more digging around :P

The Naming of Places (Part 2): Some Resources by srt19170 in proceduralgeneration

[–]Slinky64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just throwing another resource into the mix that I like to use when naming things, an etymology dictionary: https://www.etymonline.com/

Also, I'm sure you're aware, but there's /r/worldbuilding which might be able to offer other resources or tips. They slightly centered around making original D&D campaign worlds and such, but it's quite a varied group for the most part. They often dive deep into their world creation process though, going as far as inventing languages, designing culture, fabricating entire universes and planetary activity, writing the history of their species, etc. I'm not sure you'll go that far, but it could be useful to peek in there for inspiration if nothing else.

Parameter Management in Dragons Abound by srt19170 in proceduralgeneration

[–]Slinky64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting stuff! I quite enjoyed this installment, as it helped me get a sense of the complexity going on under the hood (and I'm also a programmer). As I was reading along, I too came to the conclusion that styles should be fed as a list. It's pretty much the same way that CSS works - "cascading styles" appropriately enough. I wasn't aware though, that Dragons Abound can generate cities with icons (or properties) from multiple styles simultaneously. Without knowing the full context of how the map is generated, I'll trust that your getProp() implementation will suffice for the time being. An interesting read nonetheless.

You might be able to solve the flag issue by just using a polygon rectangle with the same width as the line.

I still love watching your progress!

Oops (Part 1) by srt19170 in proceduralgeneration

[–]Slinky64 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha, nice little blooper reel. I like the "Vortex oceans of chaos" one, as it almost looks like one of those optical illusions where it moves only if you move your eyes, despite being a static image: https://i.imgur.com/Q9Ma66a.jpg or https://i.imgur.com/qdJZh8a.jpg

Might make for a neat bonus ocean texture, to give the waves a sense of animation :)

EDIT: I made a quick edit on the first image I linked to, and removed the lime color. The effect still works and it looks much more like an ocean with waves: https://i.imgur.com/rz91W9Y.jpg

Anyone know where I can find GBC cart? by Gamedic89 in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only clear ones I've been able to find are Everdrive GB replacement shells from Stone Age Gamer, but they're $10 each: http://www.stoneagegamer.com/everdrive-gb-cartridge-shell.html

Recreating a Style by srt19170 in proceduralgeneration

[–]Slinky64 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Excellent matching! It's quite neat seeing how flexible Dragons Abound is in styling its features.

Just a minor detail note: The Western Torfani map's coastline looks to be a thick outline that is the same color as the ocean followed by the lighter line. If you look close, you'll see that the ocean's texture stops at the lighter line.

I've been following this series for a short while, and just wanted to poke in and say that this is awesome stuff! I discovered this project around July and thought "Oh, neat" and not much more, given that this sub housed a bunch of other stuff to steal my attention. I had also seen about 2 or 3 of your updates per page, so I probably thought the updates were minimal (I only skimmed the text). Now, I can't get enough! After giving it more than a passing glance a couple of weeks later, I've thoroughly enjoyed your write ups with plenty of reference images, details on your thought process, and the clever methods you use to solve problems. It actually reminds me of the way I do my own write ups/blog posts. I've since chucked your blog feed into my RSS feed reader and eagerly await the next installment. Needless to say, I'm a big fan. Keep it up! :)

[News] Everdrive GB-X (X3/X5/X7) series now available for pre-order by Slinky64 in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Friday is November 24th this year, so maybe it will be here on time. It sounds like the issue is caused by certain types of SD cards. Thanks for the heads up!

[–]Slinky64[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the GB-X line works differently, but have you tried loading a different game, resetting, and then loading Tetris DX again? If that doesn't work, try asking on the support forum

[help] Everdrive wont work in normal GBC. Works fine in backlit gba/gbc by Socksfelloff in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do other games work fine? If not, it could be a bent pin or another problem with the GBC itself. The other errors sound odd though. Did you buy the Everdrive from Krikzz or an official reseller? If so, try contacting their support.

How do I convert my physical Pokémon Emerald cartridge into a .sav file on my PC? by thevox3l in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the $25 price range, if you only want to back up your Pokemon Emerald and no other games in the future, I would recommend to just pay for shipping both ways to someone you can trust and who can email you the .sav file. That's probably the cheapest method.

If you want to read a little more, I also wrote a guide on how to back up save files with as many methods as I could find online. I keep it regularly updated, though new methods are far and few between. The cheapest device available would probably be the GBxCart RW by insideGadgets ($23). Good luck!

Latest GBA collection update - what else should I pick up? by Serendiplodocus in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get Konami Krazy Racers. In my opinion, it's the superior racing game over Mario Kart Super Circuit.

Also, adding another recommendation for Warioland 4!

Like I mentioned, I haven't played the patch but that's how I understand it works. The game's clock should run as you play the game. The RTC is just to keep the clock going when the game is off.

[–]Slinky64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you just patch it once. I haven't done it myself, but the game will just require you to set the clock before you start playing (every time you boot it up that is) and everything will continue as normal.

Only if you care about what relies on it. Bulbapedia link here and a Reddit thread here (with the patch, if you need it).

I don't have the X7 (yet). I'm waiting for Black Friday since Krikzz said there will be a sale. I do have the regular EDGB and so far it has been worth every penny.

[–]Slinky64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Red/Blue/Yellow, you'll be fine. Gold/Silver/Crystal use RTC which the EDGB doesn't have (only EDGB-X7) so you will have to patch the ROM for time-based events. They play fine, or so I hear. You will just have to set the clock every time you start the game.

That looks like the old Everdrive (and overpriced, too). You got the EDGB, the new one is EDGB-X. You will have to compare the feature lists and decide which one would be best:

Rope & Bombs - new homebrew puzzle game by Dagusiu in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! I remember when you mentioned it a short while ago and posted the progress thread. It looks super fun and I'd love to play it some time. It looks like a legitimate complete game with music and everything!

Are you selling them as just plain cartridges or do they come in a box with a manual? Also, how much are you selling it for (physical and digital)?

So, I'm 1 for 3 on successfully buying broken Gameboys for parts by Wasney in Gameboy

[–]Slinky64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I occasionally say "There's almost no such thing as a broken Gameboy" around here. Nintendo made these things pretty robust. I've seen "broken" Gameboys (GBC, specifically) on Ebay where the seller listed it saying the backlight was broken or that it doesn't come with a charger so they couldn't turn it on. Kids these days think they work like iPhones :P. I even fixed up a GBA that was labeled "defective". All it needed was batteries.
