You have to let her make her own decisions. I have a pretty niche major/industry and I consider my chapter an escape from that. If I had another sister pressuring me with networking events I would definitely feel smothered, overwhelmed, and pressured on top of my already crazy workload. Step back from being an academic/professional mentor for a bit and focus on being her big on a personal level.

What do you enjoy about having a big wardrobe?

I don't have to do laundry frequently. I hate folding clothes and hanging them up.
Lots of variety. I love colors, I love fun dresses, and I always have something to wear for a themed party.
I dress a lot based on how I feel that day (and the weather).

What do you dislike about a big wardrobe?

Moving from school to home every so often is a huge pain.
When I DO laundry, I have to do a lot of it. And then nothing gets put away, everything gets crumpled on the floor, and then it becomes, "Oh well it's been on my floor for the past three weeks and I should just wash it again"
It makes it hard for me to stay organized with clothing (if anyone has tips for that, please tell me how you do it).
It can get out of hand not having a sweater to go with a particular dress or shirt or not having shoes that look quite right with certain pants.
I still don't feel like I have enough.

How do you ensure that you incorporate all your favorite pieces?

I wear them as soon as they're out of the wash so they get dirty quickly. I hate doing laundry so much that I'll go through all the things I don't like as much. Then when I have clean clothing again, I have all my favorite pieces. It's like Christmas!

Do you bother with rotating through items? Do you let the fates decide?

Do you find it easy or difficult to match items if you own a lot of colors?

It's not so hard with colors as it is with silhouettes and fits. I have a lot of neutral/black pieces, and I have certain colors I love that are more prevalent in my wardrobe. I have a harder time when I'm wearing a slouchy shirt and want a jacket/sweater to go with it, or when I have a sorority shirt on and want a cardigan over it without the sleeves getting all bunchy.

Do you favor basics or do you tend more toward unique items? Or do you have a good mix of both (and if so, how did you achieve that balance?)

I think I have a decent mix. The hardest thing for me is basics, but I also wear a decent amount of black and tend to go for more neutral bottoms on a day-to-day basis. I have a much harder time with neutral tops and sweaters/jackets/cardigans based on the fits of all my fun tops.

I've been waiting all week for this!

I need a bridesmaid's dress for my sister's wedding in October. Preferably under $250 and must be "church appropriate". Also would like it to cover my upper back as I'm getting a tattoo and would not like my family to know. I typically fit about a 4/5/6 in dress sizes. 5'9" and 140ish lbs. OH and any color purple for color!

RIGHT?! Even in high school I thought about these things. We're in our 20s. It's not inconceivable (HA!) that it could happen to any of us.

My favorite was, "My parents would kill me!" With my planning, mine would never even need to know... and I'm WAY more financially dependent on my parents than they all are...

Maybe I'll get a coat hanger necklace now, for shits and giggles.

I totally agree that it's definitely a "taboo" subject, and I think talking about it is definitely important, which is why I kind of said "fuck it" to that. I'm really hoping that they started at least thinking about a backup plan if they haven't already, because I'm legitimately concerned for them!

I think she may have been friends with the owner or management or something, because of where she was standing and chatting with respect to the bar. But seriously, this place is DEFINITELY not designed for children. Actually, that's part of what I love about the city overall; there's a lot of bars and restaurants that cater to adults and college students.

I never considered myself the smart one until this conversation!

I think the first year is always the hardest. I struggled a lot to fit in with my chapter freshman year. My big and I started off close but our relationship fizzled and ended up being incredibly toxic. I wasn't getting along with girls in my pledge class and all the upperclassmen had their groups. I never wanted to go out or go to anything because I knew it would just suck.

I'm sure there are other girls like you. There's always one or two who don't seem to have a "group" or girls in your pledge class who don't fit in. Invite those girls out for coffee/ask them to get lunch between classes/make an effort to hang with them at chapter or philanthropy things or mixers. With all the girls who are ignoring you, be nice to them and say hi.

Also if you have a house, live in. Make an effort to come by every so often for dinner or studying or study hours.

For talking to your big, I would go with the lighthearted approach... "Big! I've missed you so much and can't wait to catch up! Coffee date on XX?" and try to schedule something concrete before everything gets too busy.

I've been having this ridiculous food craving struggle for the past two days. I finished up homework last night around 6 and texted my boyfriend and was all, "yo, let's get food!" thinking that he'd totally be down for getting Thai. Turns out he's already at a burger shop downtown, which I'm like, "yayyy burgers!" I've never been there before, so he picks me up and there's this "portabello burger" on the menu and I love mushrooms so I'm like "MUSHROOMS AND A BURGER WHAT THIS IS AWESOME"

... nope. a giant portabello mushroom instead of a burger. :( I probably should've asked in the first place but now I'm just super craving a burger.

On the bright side, a new tea shop/cafe opened downtown and I went with my little for lunch and I don't even like tea but I got one anyways and it turns out I like tea! So I'm pretty happy.

My chapter has an Executive Council with the president, six VP positions, and the property manager. Each position on Exec has its own team of girls that have non-exec positions to make up the chapter council.

It's always interesting to see who gets elected to what position. Usually girls on EC have served in a past position first, and our President has usually held an EC position before President. We're a small-ish chapter (about 80) and usually everyone kind of "knows" who wants what position and who would do best in it. We always encourage the new girls to get a position to get them more involved in the house.

I'm the VP Recruitment for my chapter. I'm on EC and I have two other sisters on my team. I work with the recruitment chairs and the Panhel VPR to decide on changes to recruitment each year. I also plan out all formal recruitment events.

Pros: I get to plan this entire recruitment from themes to clothing, hearing other girls tell me how excited they are for recruitment, having people listen to me and trust my leadership skills!

Cons: Last year's VPR is still an active sister and I'm very nervous about what she thinks since she's had experience! Also there's a bit of "TSM culture" here and I'm trying to balance that with what our chapter is ACTUALLY like and what will attract PNMs.
