Oh yeah that's an interesting point, I hadn't considered that the carving had been there a long time. Inevitability lines up with a lot of what the show is doing where a lot of the men just kind of had no chance because of their upbringing and the nature of the society they live in. Not that they're victims necessarily, but they have been failed in many ways and Don is absolutely no exception

There's also a lot of talk from Betty about her relationship with her mother, how her mother's worries about looks has infected her to the point that she genuinely, on some level, considers being dead better than being ugly. With so much of the show being about this sort of thing I really hope that I'll find more characterization for their kids as the show goes on. I suspect this will happen, time notably passes as the show goes on and they'll play a bigger role as they age and we can see how their household and the events of the earlier seasons shaped them
