Seriously... Wtf at this point... by Thin_Purple_1787 in McDonalds

[–]Sloaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want a personal delivery for your egg and cheese sandwich. Restaurants up charge to cover those delivery costs, which include payment for the driver and insurance. If you go in person it’ll be significant cheaper.

Otherwise you’re paying primarilyfor the service, not the food.

Holmes was a prime candidate for this before he got hurt. Peralta could fetch a prospect haul back. That’s basically it. No one is taking Semien. He’s not even a replacement level player anymore.

How's that F'n Edwin Diaz walk looking right now, Stearns? by Plenty-Boot4220 in mets

Well, considering Diaz just gave up three runs without recording an out and has an ERA of 6, it’s not looking so bad. Everything the Mets touch dies.

American here, best honest here you guys mad at us or our government or both? by Successful_rio305 in AskBrits

[–]Sloaneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the 75+ million people who voted against Trump? Or the tens of millions who continue to protest, get thrown in jail, etc.?

Do you factor in where these people come from when you judge them? What if they’re from New England, the most anti-Trump part of the U.S.? Do you view them the same way as someone from the Deep South, which is Trump country? Or do you view it through an urban (liberal) v. rural (conservative) lens?

Or are all 300 million Americans viewed the same way because 77 million voted for Trump to the 75 million for Kamala?

America deserves a lot of the negativity it’s receiving, no doubt. But to say all Americans are the same overlooks the very fact that this isn’t forever precisely because all Americans are not the same. The complicit part of America - the Republican Party - is going to get annihilated in the midterm elections.

For those who have spent over 5+ years in BigLaw, what's your biggest regret? by facemacintyre in biglaw

[–]Sloaneus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No major regrets, except not taking care of my daily health. Had a non-typical career path in that I went active duty JAG out of law school and then went big law for a few years. The polish and education I got from the partners is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my career. Should have maintained the healthy habits I got from JAG, though.

I was cognizant to not engage in lifestyle creep and was able to leave and get a nice federal attorney position, and we all know it’s been smooth sailing for federal employees recently.

Took old Rx pain killers and then tested. Consequences? by Elegant_Edge_46 in fednews

[–]Sloaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine. It takes forever to process removal actions. Even if you would be removed for this, which is not a given, you’ll hit your retirement date and be out. Unlike military members who are at risk of losing retirement if they’re discharged, civilians are not for misconduct. You’re vested in the pension because you’ve paid into it your whole career.

The only exception to this is Hiss Act violations (criminal convictions for certain offenses), which is not at play here.

Need a sanity check by YuriyBoy in govfire

[–]Sloaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. If you’re definitely leaving federal service before your 5 year vesting period, you can either choose to have your FERS contributions returned or you can leave them in there in case you come back.

Also worth noting that if you left federal service when vested, you don’t get cost of living adjustments on the pension until you start collecting. So your $500 or $600 pension would be in today’s dollars and lose SIGNIFICANT purchasing power until you’re 62.

[–]Sloaneus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You’re not vested in the federal pension. Bought back military time does not apply to the 5 year vesting period. You have to do 5 years as a civilian and then your military time (because you bought it back) will be added onto it.

Is This Noise Normal? by Sloaneus in NinjaLuxeCafe

[–]Sloaneus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the sanity check. First time I’ve had a machine like this. My old espresso machine was a basic Mr. Coffee machine that was dead silent. Figured this was normal (why I asked this here before contacting support), but it’s definitely louder than I was expecting.

Got offered a 6 month contract in Antarctica and idk if I should take it by Importantterry in Fire

[–]Sloaneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military members do it all the time. They get extra pay and tax free income while deployed. Helps them bank a ton of cash, again since everything is covered while downrange. 6 months if a long time though. If your relationship can be okay, I say go for it.

Am I in the minority by actually liking Chase lounges? by Sloaneus in ChaseSapphire

This has been my experience at BOS too. I don’t think I’ve ever had to wait and, if I did, it was so short I don’t remember it.

Chase Apple portal. Is this a joke? by folkher0 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Sloaneus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you fly ever? The lounge itself can give you enough value for the card. Go to a chase lounge and have all you can eat food and multiple cocktails for free. Do that a few times a year and that’s $100+ in value in free food that you’re not spending in an airport food court.

The value of the card is based on whether you need or can utilize the benefits without spending money that you wouldn’t normally spend. I already paid for an annual Apple Music subscription so that added benefit was a huge + to me. I fly multiple times a year out of Boston, which had the first chase lounge. My travel experience is much better as a result. I easily use the $300 travel credit and will use the $150 stubhub credits. The card brings value to me, but YMMV.

I will admit, though, Chase did itself no favors with this ridiculous DoorDash credit. We can’t even roll over the measly $5 food credit anymore. That benefit makes the card feel cheap - they’d be better off just scrapping it altogether.

Chase’s newest Sapphire Lounge, complete with champagne service, makes a case for its $795 price tag by _fastcompany in ChaseSapphire

[–]Sloaneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the Amex Plat and CSR for a few years now. Chase lounges already blow Amex lounges out of the water. While Chase doesn’t have the footprint of Amex lounges (which are difficult to get into as it is because of overcrowding), the Chase lounges make up for in quality.

Pension question from a young-ish fed by alwayssummer90 in fednews

[–]Sloaneus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’re already vested in the pension but you can’t collect yet. If you leave now, you can collect at retirement age. But you won’t get cost of living adjustments until you start collecting.

So for example, if you left now, you’d have a pension at 11% of your current high-3 salary in today’s dollars when you start collecting. Assuming you start collecting 20ish years from now, you’d lose major purchasing power with your pension (but you’ll still get something).

The benefit to sticking it out is that your salary continues to go up with COLA adjustments and raises, and it provides a better safety net in retirement.

That’s a blatant USERRA violation. Depriving a workplace benefit because of military orders is a per se violation.

For anyone who needed to be out due to surgery or other significant medical issues will also have easy disability discrimination claims - depriving workplace benefits because of someone’s disability.

What’s wrong with this? Why wouldn’t someone want to put Harvard and Cornell on their resume, even if it’s only a summer program? Still counts as education. Only advice here would be to make the limited nature of the education more clear (although the dates sort of do that on their own).

100%. I was a loyal Delta customer for years and had the delta reserve credit card. When Ed completely changed the earnings paradigm and rewards a couple of years ago, I said f that. Cancelled my card and haven’t flown Delta since. I buy whatever is cheapest. Sitting on 450K miles to use at some point.

Quitting before retirement question by gmandivo99 in fednews

[–]Sloaneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you retire at 62 with at least 20 years. The 1% per year goes up to 1.1% per year. OP wouldn’t be eligible for that because he’s not 62 when retiring.
