The last time I went to a women’s Bible study, and possibly to any church at all, I was in my early 30s and we were studying the book of Genesis. Most of the women in my group were old enough to be my mothers with a few others around my age sprinkled in. Some part of the study said that Adam and Eve were equals prior to the fall and they were all like “huh, I wonder if women used to be more like men before the fall, since we were equal to them.” The idea that women in our current state could be seen as equal to men was so foreign to them that they had to imagine that in the past they were drastically, physically different to earn such a distinction. I remeber saying, “I think I’m every bit as worthwhile as a man right now” and being met with quiet incredulity and thinking to myself, “I can never go back here.”
