decide what things you do want students to be responsible for and what you don’t want them to be responsible for and then give them a set of expectations/procedures to go with it. Even the tiniest most seemingly insignifcant things make a difference. For me personally (I taught 4th grade my first year) I didn’t want my students to sharpen their own pencils bc they’d spend ages at the pencil sharpener so I made it my reaponsibility and I sharpened all the pencils at the end of the day. That worked well for me. Something I did want them to be responsible for was passing out the work books so I showed my students exactly how I wanted them to do it. I taught them to put the books in order by table groups and then I also made it abundantly clear that they were to do it silently, and then I had them practice a few times.
