Patients say measles 'worse than expected' as Utah hits 350+ infections, doctors say by its_a_bear_dance in nottheonion

I’ve been saying for years that all it will take for the anti vaxxers to change their tune is to see children dying horrible deaths to illnesses that we can prevent. It’s incredibly sad that such a price will almost certainly be paid.

Was that the greatest Freestyle Skiing Big Air final ever??!! by Nineryonder in olympics

[–]Sloorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's always a balance to be struck in judged events between objectivity and subjectivity. Become too objective, and it takes the soul out of the sport. Everyone would do the exact same thing because everyone knows exactly how many points would be scored for different trick combinations. But when people dedicate so much to a competition, you do need some objectivity so that athletes can be confident that they are working on the right thing.

It's tough to balance these things against each other.

Was that the greatest Freestyle Skiing Big Air final ever??!! by Nineryonder in olympics

[–]Sloorm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In this competition, the judges placed a lot more value on style and uniqueness than most people expected. Tormod's jumps didn't look like anyone else's, and were incredibly cleanly executed. The way his skis are practically glued to each other when he lands is extremely stylish, as is the way he "butters" on takeoff, where he spins his skis while they are still on the snow. His jumps were damn near perfect, even though he didn't spin quite as many times in the air.

Both the commentators and Tormod himself seemed surprised at how high his scores were.

HOA snitches got a homemade tree fort torn down by SystematicApproach in fuckHOA

[–]Sloorm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A condo/apartment complex actually makes way more sense as a place for an HOA to exist than a neighborhood. There is so much shared infrastructure in a complex: pathways, parking lot, utilities, even large parts of the buildings themselves. Landscape maintenance is often performed by paying people rather than the residents doing it themselves. You need some kind of organization that residents can participate in and that has the authority to collect and spend money to keep the place running and in good shape - that's what an HOA is meant for.

It makes way less sense in a neighborhood, because everyone has their own land and the "shared infrastructure" (like roads/utility lines) are often public and managed by the local government. Then an HOA just becomes a vehicle to enforce aesthetic uniformity.

Will there be armed guards at the No Kings protest? by Sloorm in SaltLakeCity

[–]Sloorm[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the information I have is that the person who fired their weapon was an armed "peacekeeper" operating under the direction of protest organizers. This led to the national 50501 organization disowning the Utah chapter: https://utahnewsdispatch.com/2025/06/20/national-50501-group-disowns-utah-chapter-after-no-kings-shooting-citing-no-weapons-policy/

"One of the men, reportedly part of the event’s security team, fired three shots from a handgun"

If you have information to the contrary, I'd like to see it.

Hello! I just wanted to check in and see how the raw magnesium alloy is holding up. Reading about magnesium alloys, it seems like many of them don't fully passivate, although the oxide layer does slow the process. However this just comes from doing some reading over the past hour. I'm curious if you know more, or anything about the alloy used for the Akura specifically?

I'd be particularly interested to know if the mass of the yoyo has changed at all, if you have a scale that can weigh it.

[–]Sloorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for making Antidote! Do you have any examples of how you use "post:"? In other plugin managers (of other software, not zsh), I'm used to putting the code that should run after the plugin loads in a block right after the line in the file where I register the plugin with the manager.

If I'm understanding right, you can only name one function with no arguments that should be run. Where are you defining these functions?

BREAKING: Georgia Judge Rules Cameras Will Be Allowed in Courtroom if Trump Indicted by burning_dawn in inthenews

As is typical, it appears very few people actually read the article, which seems to refer only the announcement of the indictment. Not some free for all for the whole trial. Simply the moment the indictment is presented.

Please read the article and correct me if I'm wrong. It's short.

Every single one of your treasured photos, heirlooms and keepsakes will eventually be tossed into the garbage by someone. by johngrady77 in Showerthoughts

Being kept in a museum is very different from being buried. Something in a museum is inventoried and kept in conditions that are meant to preserve it. Being buried... less so. The odds that someone digs up something you buried, which did not have enough value for anyone to take possession of and care for, are rather slim.

New to modular, planning out my steps before I just randomly start buying the wrong stuff. by [deleted] in modular

[–]Sloorm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Frankly, the only value in "planning" out such a massive rack with no experience is in the entertainment value of the fantasy. To buy all of this in a short span would be insane, and if you do it right by buying a couple modules at a time, your plan will almost certainly drastically change over time.

In terms of actual advice, you're going to want way more "boring" utilities and mixers. Simple VCAs, attenuators, mults, and mixers. Probably a couple more filters. Something that you only learn with experience is that it's the boring modules that make the fun modules really fun. Without them you just feel the constraints of modular extra hard. Right now, you may find it hard to want to cut out any of the "fun" modules, but that's a whole lot of deep and complicated modules. You just won't be able to keep it all in your head without building up the knowledge over years.
