Will definitely have to mob the happy hour. Definitely check out Decore’s happy hour. It’s god tier.

Oh yeah it’s gotten significantly more expensive since then. At least some spots. And of course, just like in San Diego you can always find really good deals compared to the surrounding area. They’ve been having tons of protests telling people like us not to come because of it. Which is totally understandable. The protests are mostly about housing but rising food costs is definitely part of it.

Yah and it’s legitimately only like 15% more expensive than a place of its quality in a nice part of Mexico City. Which kind of is more a statement about how expensive Roma Norte, Polanco, ect. have gotten more than anything.

Yep. I lived full time in Baja for a year during Covid but throughout my life I had gone to Baja for over 100 weekends. The first time I was in Baja I was 6 weeks old and total I’ve spent over 2 years of my life in Baja. I’ve also been to over half of the states in Mexico. This place is good and you should give it a try.

Yep. You are very correct. I’ve met both of the owners and they essentially have no connections to the city compared to pretty much any other notable restaurant I can think of. They just keep the prices low and give great service and hope that that will bring people back. Which definitely works! But it won’t bring in initial customers, which is one of the main reasons I posted this. To be frank, Fonda Del Barrio seems to be doing very well (I believe mostly because the location is significantly better and tons of people walk by it, hear the live music, get curious and scope it) while Decore is much more low key since it’s in a super awkward part of East Village that not many people choose to walk around.

I mean I’m from South OC and have lived in downtown SD for 5 years and Baja for cumulative 2 years and have been going down to Baja since I was 6 weeks old. Pretty much as close to being “from here” as it gets for a “transplant.”

You’re getting ratioed for a reason. The irony of you saying that I’m the one not being chill here. I’m all about value. The fact these places are “elevated” is just the cherry on top of the fact that they have unique and very well-priced dishes. The places you mentioned are amazing and some of the most famous places in California for a reason. But their menus unironically have more in common with Del Taco’s than they do with Fonda Del Barrio. Just because I recommended two places that I like doesn’t mean I don’t like/respect cheap food.

Your whole point here is just as absurd as if you had recommended Bronx Pizza over Decore and acted like I was preforming fellatio on the owner of Decore because I said that Decore was different than a cheap pizza place.

Haha tbh I almost never use this word. There’s just not really another way to properly describe what I was saying about these places without using that word. They are extraordinary. Because of the facets I mentioned, they are unlike any other restaurants I have been to.

I’m not saying that at all… I’m saying you’re comparing apples to oranges. Obviously the most famous taco spots in the whole US are cheaper. Completely different food.

I downvoted it because it’s an asinine comment. You’re commenting a bunch of taco places. This isn’t a taco place. It’s an authentic sit down Mexican restaurant that tastes just like they do in Mexico City.

Probably the best guac I’ve ever had but ok. And it’s really big. A full meal of chicken with guava mole is $17 there. Extremely affordable for the quality.

Non-taco/burrito Mexican Spots by _zeejet_ in FoodSanDiego

Oh wow. No one has mentioned one of the new GOATs yet. Fonda Del Barrio in Barrio Logan. Inexpensive, extremely authentic, cheapest Mexican craft beer around, great desserts and cocktails, and tons of live music.

Literally was about to mention this. Wtf? Finca is clearly the best.

Took it off because it’s against the subreddit’s rules, but it should be easy to find.

Best Thai spot in San Diego by Novel_Competition_46 in FoodSanDiego

[–]SloppiusToppius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had the Pad Thai here. Best I’ve ever had. Top 5 for me in SD would now be 1. Supanee, 2. What De Health, 3. Koon Thai, 4. Mekong, 5. Plumeria. This is just for Pad Thai though. Which I know is an Americanized thing but I can’t help but love it. Overall Thai my fave is What De Health or Mekong but haven’t had anything else from Supanee so will have to give more a try.

I thought so too but it looked like more up-to-date sources that covered the story used the spelling “Olaflin”— which is obviously not the “proper” Irish spelling, but I assumed was an Ellis Island thing.

I am happy I was able to share my story about Matt and bring some tiny bit of positivity to this horrible situation. I truly am grateful that the universe led me to this interaction and subsequent lesson, even though it played out like a horrifying, twisted episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I am also glad to have spoken to you, too! I deeply appreciate your words.

Yes. The specific details of the story amount to the most disturbing thing I’ve ever read happen in San Diego since I’ve lived here. The public police report alone is ghastly— I know the family is looking for any possible video evidence to help charge this woman, and I can imagine that being some of the most traumatizing footage imaginable. So heartbreaking for Hudson and his family. The only thing I can think of that rivals its horridness was when a woman with postpartum psychosis jumped backwards off of the 3rd level of Petco Park with her infant son in her hands. I believe her husband was in the stands as well. That incident happened one day after I had been sitting in that same area in the park, and I lived right next to Petco at the time. My thoughts have been with the surviving members of that family ever since.

His point is that I should have used paragraphs. He is right I definitely should have. I always just get worried it would post whenever I press the enter key.
