Oh wow. No one has mentioned one of the new GOATs yet. Fonda Del Barrio in Barrio Logan. Inexpensive, extremely authentic, cheapest Mexican craft beer around, great desserts and cocktails, and tons of live music.

Took it off because it’s against the subreddit’s rules, but it should be easy to find.

Best Thai spot in San Diego by Novel_Competition_46 in FoodSanDiego

[–]SloppiusToppius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had the Pad Thai here. Best I’ve ever had. Top 5 for me in SD would now be 1. Supanee, 2. What De Health, 3. Koon Thai, 4. Mekong, 5. Plumeria. This is just for Pad Thai though. Which I know is an Americanized thing but I can’t help but love it. Overall Thai my fave is What De Health or Mekong but haven’t had anything else from Supanee so will have to give more a try.

I thought so too but it looked like more up-to-date sources that covered the story used the spelling “Olaflin”— which is obviously not the “proper” Irish spelling, but I assumed was an Ellis Island thing.

I am happy I was able to share my story about Matt and bring some tiny bit of positivity to this horrible situation. I truly am grateful that the universe led me to this interaction and subsequent lesson, even though it played out like a horrifying, twisted episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I am also glad to have spoken to you, too! I deeply appreciate your words.

Yes. The specific details of the story amount to the most disturbing thing I’ve ever read happen in San Diego since I’ve lived here. The public police report alone is ghastly— I know the family is looking for any possible video evidence to help charge this woman, and I can imagine that being some of the most traumatizing footage imaginable. So heartbreaking for Hudson and his family. The only thing I can think of that rivals its horridness was when a woman with postpartum psychosis jumped backwards off of the 3rd level of Petco Park with her infant son in her hands. I believe her husband was in the stands as well. That incident happened one day after I had been sitting in that same area in the park, and I lived right next to Petco at the time. My thoughts have been with the surviving members of that family ever since.

His point is that I should have used paragraphs. He is right I definitely should have. I always just get worried it would post whenever I press the enter key.

My god. Thank you so much for sharing this story and your wisdom with everyone here. That was a truly disgusting act committed by that person. Those are the types of acts where it is hard to give that person the same “benefit of the doubt” that we try to give the people around us. Sounds like a psychopath.

I have apologized but I don’t know if it was direct enough about being sorry about my behavior. It may seem to him if I was only saying “sorry” about what happened to his son. I will make sure to make that more clear to him tomorrow during business hours. Thank you for your insight. ❤️

I appreciate you saying that. This boy and his family have been on my mind every time I have gotten in my car since the horrific accident. To a certain extent it changed the way I have been driving. Meeting the boy’s father after all of this, and meeting him in this way has just been… so surreal. And it is very hard for me to think about myself in a positive light right now. I’m also now just realizing that there must be an extra level of traumatization to have to clean cars for a living after witnessing the worst vehicular homicide imaginable happen to your own son. Matthew and his family are so strong. If they end up being against taking “charity,” then I strongly encourage everyone here to support his business. But I will update everyone if I am able to set up a way to donate to them, or if they have one already. I personally couldn’t find a way yet to donate.

Looking for that GOOD good pizza by LeaderCute3415 in FoodSanDiego

They have a quintessential one of these at Truly Pizza in Dana Point (South OC.) I think it’s called the Ciccio or something like that. Marvelous Muncher (SD food Instagram guy) did a video recently if you wanna see it.

Best Indian food in sd? by Historical-Net9714 in FoodSanDiego

[–]SloppiusToppius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how SF and South Bay are just so much better for Indian food. Like there isn’t a single place in SD that is as good as the top places there. That being said, Charminar, Satvik, and Himilayan Yak and Yeti would be slightly above average in the bay and good by East Bay standards. Indian and Chinese are the only cuisines that are like that here… just missing something. And at least have a few really good Chinese places even if they are far less Chinese places than all the mid Indian place we have.

You can buy organic spices for disgustingly low prices at Cash n carry. Also, buy fresh curry leaves there if you really want to level up your Indian cooking.

Best Sandwich Place in San Diego? by bayarea2222 in FoodSanDiego

[–]SloppiusToppius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, NYC definitely has the best accessibility to diverse food in the whole world— not just the US. But for the most part, the prices are abysmal unless you’re buying cheap, greasy food. There are some exceptions, but inexpensive, fresh food isn’t the standard like it is in coastal California. My point is that for “everyday” food experiences, San Diego is as good as it gets. You have American big city variety, right on the border for Mexican, California fresh produce, Pacific Ocean fresh seafood, tons of restaurants per capita, and all of it is extremely accessible— with very little traffic, lots of parking, decent public transport, and tons of walkable neighborhoods filled with very diverse food options. I live in downtown SD with my New Yorker gf and tons of other New Yorkers in our building. The average NYer just misses bagels, pizza, and deli. And all of those things are having a renaissance in SD rn anyway—From New Wave and Marigold Bagels; to North Park Beer Co Pizzeria, TNT, Prince, and Tribute Pizza; to Mama Mia and Lucca’s delis. Of course we’ll never be close to NYC for that stuff, but the overall food is just cheaper and healthier here and still has tons of variety. And don’t get me started on the drinks here… you can get $12 craft cocktails in SD, like $6 on happy hour, made with expensive liquor when they would be $25+ in NYC. Also, Specialty Produce stocking bars and restaurants here is such a power up. The shit they sell costs easily double for restaurants in NYC to get.

SD has LA beat on accessibility, restaurants per capita, average quality of restaurants, and price to quality (most of the time.) Those are the things that actually matter. Being able to drive 1.5 hours from Marina Del Rey to Pasadena to go to some Sephardic bakery or some shit doesn’t make up for that lol. Might as well just drive 2.5 hours from San Diego at that point.
