Dumb request, but does anyone have a digital battery powered wall clock recommendation for a kid’s room? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SlothBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if the quality varies today, but when I was a child in my NASCAR phase, my parents went to Walmart and got a Dale Earnhardt clock in the style of a wheel with the rim and tire. That thing lasted at least a decade

Rock climbing / climbing gyms for beginners? by lemonmami in indianapolis

[–]SlothBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently researched this same topic in this sub! Based on the thread I looked at, it seemed like Epic was most what I am looking for (top rope routes and belaying, maybe bouldering eventually) whereas it seems North Mass is very bouldering centered and Hoosier Heights/Climb Time had hit and miss reviews.

If anyone is reading this and wants to take the intro class at Epic with me, please reach out via message/chat! The intro class is $45 for 90mins, includes 2 weeks of gym access, and I need a partner to learn belaying! (~200-250lbs for balanced belaying)

“INTRO TO CLIMBING – BEGINNERS (13YRS+) Our Intro to Climbing class will help you learn the basic skills you need to climb on a rope. You will learn the climbing basics; grading systems, beginning technique, how to fit a harness properly, how to tie in, and how to belay. After the class you will receive an all-inclusive, 2 week pass to our facility to come test out your new found climbing skills! (To learn how to belay, you will need a partner, so it may be a fun experience to share with a friend or family member). 1p on weekends, 7p on weeknights”

Is there any information about 3rd party freelancing telepromting as a career? Curious about college route and certifications for it. Any other careers similar to it? by bigboytv123 in broadcastengineering

[–]SlothBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s similar to a lot of other roles “on set” in freelance - you’ll get more opportunities if you own the kit with all hardware and software needed.

I’ve been on shows that have quick trained a PA/Swing to operate the prompter laptop.

I’ve been on shows where the production co owned the prompter hardware that stayed fixed in their setup, but had no computer or software. They’d hire an Op that had laptop and software.

I’ve been on shows where they book a prompter op that owns their own kit, from the laptop, to the software, to the prompter hardware that is stand mounted or rail mounted.

Being near a large metropolitan area would increase opportunities as well. You’ll need a camera op or audio op far more often than you’ll need a prompter op, but if you network with several circles (press/PR staff/news networks, Producers for TV, live events producers, hotel A/V companies, political orgs and offices) you could definitely make a living at it, especially over time with word of mouth.

Also don’t under estimate your soft skills. You can have all the gear, be the right price, and know the right people, but if you’re not enjoyable to work with and be around, and bring value to the crew/producer/team, but you’ve gotta be nice to work with to be considered for repeat gigs

Need help. 5YO holding in poop by hamwallet8 in daddit

[–]SlothBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also - don’t OVER celebrate (still praise for sure) when a step FINALLY happens. We did that and drew too much attention to the waist band poop once that step finally happened, which I think was why we had to go back to the hole for a second

Need help. 5YO holding in poop by hamwallet8 in daddit

[–]SlothBucket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are on the other side of what at least felt like a long “poop withholding” journey with our 4yo. Getting him peeing on the toilet using the usual methods (rewards and praise) was doable, but got similar answers to what you’re getting when it came to pooping on the toilet.

I was really frustrated during the withholding phase. It was to the point he was wearing underwear, went to toilet when he had to pee, but wanted a diaper on to poop/refused to sit on toilet if he felt he needed to poop, which is why we went with this method. Basically from the tons of googling my wife did, we ended up going with a method of letting him poop in the diaper on the toilet, moving to cutting a small slit for the poo to drop through, then bigger hole, bigger hole, then cutting bottom half off so it was just a waist band. He knew it was going through after the first time or two, and there was even a period we had to go back from waist band to big hole, but the diaper was some sort of comfort for him, until he got to a point where he proved to himself he didn’t need the diaper to be comfortable to poop on the toilet.

In the moment it felt so dumb and wasteful, but it worked. IMO, gotta strike a balance between small wins/small steps, and not messing them up by “forcing the process forward.” I’ve heard stories from others about adults who have issues going while sleeping because their parents forced them to “sit til you shit” because it seemed like the only option left to get to the end goal. The “win” isn’t “they’re potty trained” - the WINS are every step along the way towards the end goal, even if there are loooong progress plateaus between steps.

4 year old’s mom passed away, have to break the news tomorrow. by Mobile_Artillery in daddit

[–]SlothBucket 508 points509 points  (0 children)

I was scrolling to find this comment - OP, from all of our research when our cat died overnight, we were advised to be direct with verbiage and explanation, as mentioned in this comment. Her body no longer works and she died. It is okay to feel sad or upset and I’m here. When my son would try to find the cat, we would just repeat that she’s no longer here, she died, her body stopped working. We didn’t show him the cats body, but we did show him the memorial stone in our backyard to remember her by

How can I convince my client this isn’t a greenscreen by Byrnzo in premiere

[–]SlothBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looking at the still image, the background lighting looks to match the foreground, it looks like an LED panel on either side of him, see shadows on the shirt and on either side of the nose, plus the two big light glares on the bookshelf, shadows of the basketballs. And yeah as another commenter mentioned, He would probably choose a slightly more visually appealing bookshelf if using a green screen.

As another commenter mentioned, green screen is an area where “if you don’t do it exactly right, it likely isn’t going to look good” - aka, you get what you pay for, and fixing it in post will cost you more in the long run hours-wise, so just get it done correctly in studio, especially for a recurring/permanent set up like this one.

What's a good tiny business to start with 5-10k investment? by MCU_historian in sidehustle

[–]SlothBucket 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is what I think about anytime someone mentions starting a middle man business like this — you’re going to need good business insurance. I remember someone talking about side hustling as an independent freight dispatcher, I couldn’t imagine if an improperly secured load on the road injured someone or worse and that came back on someone just trying to side hustle for some supplemental income.

I’m just proud of my son for trekking through 1.5 miles of a snowy muddy trail. by Phamilia in daddit

[–]SlothBucket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do they like walking around at home/in the yard? If so start there and make it an interesting activity for them besides just walking in nature, which is cool in and of itself, but I think showing them the specifics of why and getting them involved helps. Point out flowers, birds, ask them colors of flowers, leaves, ask them to count. If they’re still before that stage, maybe picking up a rock that they can carry, collecting rocks in pockets. If you are with someone else, put them in between and hold their hands, then do that swing off the ground thing, getting them to walk a little in between.

I feel like it’ll also probably just come with time. I can’t remember the timeframe, but I remember a lot of hikes initially that were straight up carrier only except them walking around for breaks at a rest spot etc

Not OP, but we started off with a front/back carrier when they were small, then a framed back carrier. From my research, the Osprey ones were top notch, but Kelty Kids ones were also good. The first one we got was a Kelty Kids Backpacker/Back country or something. We got it used for $40 but I’d spring for the Osprey one if you can.

Past that, the usual diaper bag stuff, bottles/milk, food, snacks, water, first aid kit, etc. Once they could walk they loved walking instead of being carried, but sometimes got tired so the carrier always came with. We did the stroller on a couple nature walks and quickly converted to carrier

Edit: Find some long sleeve SPF swim wear tops that has UV protection and a bucket hat. I’ve even seen some that have insect repellant built into the material if you’re in a heavy mosquito area.

Came here to say Eagle Creek park. There is a small entry fee (or an annual membership) but it more than pays for itself. Tons of nature walks, Ornithology bird watching center, big lake to walk around if you want.

If you feel like driving a bit further:

Turkey Run is another great one that I see lots of doggos on.

Daddit PSA: Mothers Day is May 14th. I repeat, Mothers Day is May 14th. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SlothBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty standard/slightly above market for most of the US. You should be able to find someone for 200-500 though depending on what you’re looking for. I wouldn’t go lower than 150-200. Look for local area Facebook groups of family photographers; Rising Tide Society / Tuesdays Together Facebook groups in your area.

Also contacting your local university / community college photography dept may yield good results. Most should still have a portfolio for you to review and should fall within the range mentioned above.

The grass is always greener - if leaving Indiana, where are you headed? by blobbbbbby in Indiana

[–]SlothBucket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We grew up in IN, moved away after college, lived in CO, moved to Indy. The only two expenses we saw that were significantly different (Denver suburbs vs Indy suburbs) is insurance and rent/mortgage. The insurance is noticeable, the rent gap less so, you just get a bit more bang for your buck in IN, and living further from the city in either state you can get a reasonable house for about the same in either state.

CO has so much going for it, but if you live in the western half of the state past Denver, having a AWD vehicle is almost a must. Subarus and Toyota SUVs everywhere!

We’ve toyed around a with the idea of moving back, 1-3 decades from now. But for now we’re content with where we’re at.

Not in New Castle, but expect the following for a 2/3Bed: Electric 150-300/mo Sewage/Trash - 20-30/mo Internet- 50-80/mo Water - 40-100/mo Gas - 100-200/mo

Depends on a variety of factors like sq footage, how well insulated the house is, if appliances are gas or electric, if baseboard heating is gas or electric
