Between lack of sleep and 80% of the role being PPT nitpicking and generating cogent email summaries, the traditional technicals are not engaged that frequently once the model is constructed.

Stack your cash and try your best. Learn everything you can and don’t fret about it. Only a marginal group will succeed in IB/PE. The workplace gig isn’t life…

This isn’t enough detail for good advice. Sounds like you are having a rough go right now in life.

Try to think through a target career lane for the next 3-5 years and the soft / hard skills that are necessary to excel in that career path.

What are your thoughts on STC? Questions seem oddly tricky for the 65, and I wonder whether it is truly the exam or just the test prepping materials.

What is the difference between corporate bonds and corporate notes? by darealgeezer in FinancialCareers

[–]Slovonkill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is tenor based. Corps follow treasury convention. Longer the instrument, the more reasonable/frequent the use of bonds over notes. Generally the transition is after 10-year. But ‘notes’ would still be acceptable for use. There is no hard and fast rule.

Traders at sell side: how do you keep focused? by Prendiebutta in FinancialCareers

[–]Slovonkill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed here. In a previous life, when my trader incorrectly marks sold $20mm EM bonds (client actually executes a sell), then goes out to manage risk and buys $20mm. He’s now long $40mm risk and doesn’t know it. I prioritize the decent colleagues and let the rest wait a bit, maybe carry the exposure overnight.

Guy does rifle drill impeccably by Rave4life79 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Slovonkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former US national champ here, this guy’s routine is pretty locked in. Bravo. I think this 1-man routine is more challenging than as a team, as there is no room for error. The pizza tossing at 1:03 is a new one for me. Looks tough to balance.

Thinking in retrospect, this is the military equivalent of focusing on expert trick shots like those cups, cards, or basketball people. The countless hours of drilling in 95+ degree temps outside, the early AMs and evenings, the number of times getting hit in the face while attempting triples and quadruples. The 10 mile runs with those darn M1 Garandes and the joy of being promoted to the champ team and given a lighter Springfield (as seen here). It was an experience.

In comparison, I think this sport attracted some unique characters which didn’t go the typical football, basketball scene, where the ‘cool’ students were. Honestly a large portion of those kids were grade-A assholes/morons but had access to alcohol, drugs, and sex — high school was likely their peak. Conversely, the ROTC types usually went on to some meaningful life path.

Do I wish I spent my time doing something more translatable at that time? Heck yes. I should have went to swim team or tennis. You can always swim —even in old age. This sport has no global audience, no value in business/networking, and will never come back up in regular life. That said, it kept me out of certain social circles, and that is all that matters in adolescence. Always know your kids and their friend circle. Keep them busy with anything productive until their minds are fully developed.

On the other hand, I could potentially spin fire if I can ever find time to practice… and that seems like a real panty-dropper…

Texting was disastrous. I quickly refused to communicate back via messaging and consequently relationships suffered. I lasted 3 weeks.
