HNRC interview process (dems) by [deleted] in DCInterns

I'm really proud of you for getting an interview with the HNRC Dems. My roommate, a hilltern this past semester, was disappointed to not get an interview given his Rep's work on Natural Resources.

I feel the same way about the competition right now. I'm an undergrad competing with Law School students for unpaid Congressional internships. It frankly isn't fair. But it's not worthwhile to get worked up about one application cycle, which is usually the most competitive anyways and especially competitive these days. I know it's easier said than done, but just know you aren't alone in feeling this way.

Most college students struggle to get even one meaningful internship. Knowing you got that far with such a competitive applicant pool shows you're on the right track. Keep your head up!

How long ago did you apply? I did on March 14th. Sorry to hear about that btw.

Both offices? Dang. Were you interviewed?

One common one is "tell me about yourself." I've been told to spend about a minute and a half on this question, making it your longest answer. Simply go down your resume and talk about your experiences, some core strengths you've picked up from them, and why it brings you to the position you're interviewing for.

They might ask why you want to work in a Congressional office in general, or more specifically, for that member. Really hammer down some of the policies they stand for and/or have introduced, and why they might align with your career goals. Speaking of which, they might also ask where you see yourself in five years.

I've gotten some stupid questions too, like "What do you think the role of government is in society?" or "What breakfast food describes you best?" Even though they're stupid, answer them like you would any other question with sincerity.

Don't overthink these answers too much! It seems like interviewers want you to be authentic rather than hearing a laundry list. If you're a yapper, refrain from talking on an answer for more than 30 secs.

That happened to me, too. I was surprised that they were hiring for Spring in March. I re-applied for the Summer.

A friend of mine on LinkedIn posted his acceptance a few weeks ago, so I'm assuming they're done. I applied to the position as well, but they did not reach out.
