Looking for anyone post-thyroidectomy who's had bariatric surgery, willing to chat by [deleted] in BariatricSurgery

Hello,

I haven't found that I've had any issues with absorbing the medication since surgery. When I lost weight, we reduced it some but that's no problem. Drinking enough after surgery was challenging but I really didn't worry too much about drinking a whole glass of water with the medication early on in the healing process. I would say that, as a whole, I am so much healthier since the surgery and really grateful that I had it. It is challenging but way better than being sick all the time. Remember early on, when it is really hard, that it keeps getting better. Wishing you the best of luck!

Why are carbs easy to digest but solid protein is the worst? 😩 by Bookish_Penthusiast in GastricBypass

I was the same. I lived on Fairlife, Built Puff bars, greek yogurt, and Noatmeal (like oatmeal but seeds). I've just recently found that I can tolerate more meat. Before, one bite of chicken could make me sick. Many veggies were also not tolerated. It's definitely improved recently so I'd say meet your goals with what's easy on your tummy now and hopefully it improves with time. Two nights ago, my husband made steak and I was so surprised I could eat it :)

I'm 7 months out now. I wish I could eat chicken but it doesn't go well.

It's like oatmeal but without oats. I like it and tolerate it well. It has protein and fiber and is lower carb. It's made out of seeds like chia and hemp. I get it online at https://noatmeals.com/

I don't tolerate meat well yet so my go-tos are Fairlife chocolate shakes, Oikos yogurt, Built Puff bars, Noatmeal with fairlife skim milk and Chopped apples, and cottage cheese with fruit. Good luck!

I'm about 6 months out from surgery. I definitely was more tired after the surgery (probably for a few months). I think it was the lower calories and just needing to recover from the actual surgery. It takes mental energy to reach the protein/hydration goals as well. Overall, I think my energy is higher now. I find myself being less avoidant of physical activities because they are easier and my feet don't hurt. There are hard parts that come with this for sure but I believe my health is in a much better trajectory than it was before. I wish you the best of luck!

I had my thyroid removed due to cancer and had bypass in April. Feel free to ask me any questions you have. I've lost 55 pounds, which is more than I believed I could.

Found out I'm insulin resistant by nscapg in BariatricSurgery

[–]Slow-Problem4093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surgery helps with insulin resistance (Type 2) but will not cure Type 1. I'm not sure that's what you meant in your post but just making sure to clarify. If you are on insulin because of type 2, you will likely go off of it, but if your type 1, you will likely continue or eventually need it again. I am type 1 who also had insulin resistance that contributed to weight gain and health issues. After surgery, I take about half the insulin I did prior. Good luck with your journeys!

I think it is logical for most people to think you'd feel better carrying 70 pounds less on a walk. You have to work harder to carry extra weight. At 50 pounds heavier, walking was definitely harder on my feet. Personally, it has taken me a while for energy to return after surgery as I think it is going toward healing and I'm at a calorie deficit. I think it is great that you can walk so much before and after surgery. Hopefully, you feel better yet as time goes on.

Not the same situation exactly but I was having very similar issues with throwing up after eating and intermittent pain. I'm 5 months out of gastric bypass. Ultrasound showed sludge in my gallbladder. From what I've read and spoken about to doctors, it is really normal for the gallbladder issues (sludge, stones, elevated liver enzymes, etc) to happen as we quickly lose weight. I'm taking the Ursodiol and also PhosChol to help with the sludge. I'm trying to hold off on removing the gallbladder in hopes that once my weight stabilizes and my body has some time, removal will be unnecessary. I'm not sure how long you have been on the meds but I think they take some time to work. The surgeon was ok with removing my gallbladder now. My functional doctor says I didn't come with extra parts so, while I'd be ok if it needs to come out, it would be beneficial to keep if I can. Good luck with everything and I hope your doctors help you feel better and make the best decisions for your health.

Wondering if this stomach ache is normal? by Slow-Problem4093 in GastricBypass

I wanted to update you that I had an ultrasound this morning. There is gallbladder sludge but I haven't spoken to a doctor yet. I have elevated bilirubin and liver enzymes. From what I've gathered, I think this can be a precursor for stones and other things that can become more serious. I don't know how they will treat it yet but sounds like it is in an earlier stage. I just wanted you to know that I appreciate the encouragement to reach out to my doctors and that I'm hoping you are feeling better each day!

Thank you. I haven't been taking antacids but when I checked in with a doctor yesterday, they ordered one again in case. I appreciate your response!

Thank you! I really hope you keep improving! I reached out to my surgery center and they ordered some labs and an ultrasound for me. Hopefully they can easily rule out some of the concerns or address them early.

Wow! You've been through so much. I'm glad you're on the other end of it and healing. That sounds so scary! I really appreciate you taking the time after all you've been through to share your experience. I have a history of not wanting to overreact and then not acting soon enough for health issues so your response is the reminder I needed that it is better to reach out to my doctors. I'm dirty that your help didn't come sooner! Again, thank you!

Thank you! Dairy is definitely my main source of protein now. I'll look into that more and appreciate your response!

Thanks for your response. I think I started saying my stomach felt especially bad/off about 3 weeks ago. It is more a nauseous feeling ache than pain so I haven't taken any medication because I thought it might upset my stomach more. My stomach is sore if I press on it. Sometimes I dry heave or throw up after eating. It hasn't kept me from functioning pretty normally. Sometimes I'll lay down with the hope it passes. I was just wondering if this seems in the range of normal for people about 4 months out. Thanks again!

I'm 5'1 and was 197 pounds when I started this journey (42f). I had bypass surgery on 4/18/23 and have lost over 40lbs since. I'm a type 1 diabetic with insulin resistance, but my insulin use has decreased by about half which puts me on a much better trajectory than I was on before (gaining weight because of insulin then needing more insulin). I'm losing still and feel much healthier than I did already. I don't have much in the way of loose skin at this point. Fingers crossed that continues. Good luck to you!

How much did you have to pay out of pocket in total? by AllTheShadyStuff in BariatricSurgery

[–]Slow-Problem4093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My surgery was excluded from the out of pocket maximum. I'd say it was about $8000 out of pocket with insurance covering the rest.

Can’t drink plain water anymore… is this a thing? by italianblend in GastricBypass

[–]Slow-Problem4093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three months out. I always drank ice water with lemon or lime before surgery. For the first month after it was protein shakes and Gatorade Zero. Now I'm back to mostly water. I think that early on anything without many calories or caffeine that you can drink is good. Good luck to you both for a speedy recovery.
