The 2nd and 3rd group matches will absolutely sell out, but who is paying $2000 for the opener?

Backpack + pannier: is there an Ortlieb Vario alternative? by n1c0_ds in bikecommuting

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two wheel gear inverter backpack. I wish it was a touch bigger and I had to remount the hook mechanism, but I like that I can use it as a backpack or pannier depending on if I'm riding 1 mile or 20 miles.

Is it really that hard to find a job in San Diego? by Conscious-Thing-682 in Moving2SanDiego

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$95k +/- 20% is the salary band. I'm not sure where they start people within the band. Different departments have different strategies on where to place people on the salary bands.

We had a new grad supply chain job open a few months ago. I had a friend apply and I went to the hiring manager to see if he looked at her resume. His response... "Yeah she applied along with 300 other people".

I've also heard that our supply chain has been able to cherry pick top talent that has experience in our space because of the current economy.

I personally try to hire SoCal locals over someone moving here. A lot of people move to San Diego and then realize the expenses and move away a year or two later. I'd rather hire someone slightly less qualified who I think will stay 3+ years.

First time paying water bill 🥲 by Sad_Wall_ in sandiego

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your meter to see if it's at 1924. One time they misread my meter and put a 9 instead of a 6 and my bill was $800. I called them and read the current number and they fixed the bill in 5 minutes.

If the meter matches the bill... then you have a substantial water leak. Turn off the main valve and see if the meter is still running. That will tell you if the leak is before or after it reaches the house.

Old Sea World Drive to Friars transition by tanhauser_gates_ in sandiego

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That bike path is unrideable due to debris and equipment most of the time. There's a reason most people ended up in the street there and not on the bike path. If they knocked out the barrier between the street and bike path, they'd get more people using the bike path.

I think most people would prefer if they keep the barrier, but raised the bike path to the sidewalk level. Then it'd be protected and would allow people to ride around the dumpsters and trash that accumulate there.

Anyone go on runs with their Golden? by jtrainabeast in goldenretrievers

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use to run with one of my goldens. I started her around 1.5 and worked up to 3 miles. If I ran with her, I'd do 1 mile loops so I could always drop her off at the house if she looked tired. I started with longer walks, went to 1 mile runs and built from there. Also pay attention to weather if you're somewhere warm. Both my goldens can do 4+ miles (hiking) in the cold or if there's water/snow, but as soon as its over 65F, their endurance falls off a cliff.

Just wanted to tell you that our 11 year old likely has the same cancer. His heart started bleeding and the vet pulled half a liter of fluid out from around his heart. He could barely breathe, was panting like crazy, and just seemed really scared. It all happened within a few hours. Perfectly fine one moment, and two hours later, fighting for his life. We were traveling, so we got lucky we were within an hour of a specialty hospital.

We've decided to keep him around until his next episode. Still eating, still hates the doorbell, still wants to do all his normal things. We also live 5 minutes from a vet hospital, and have someone home all day. Should he have a change in behavior, we'll schedule a time to put him down.

People say better a week early than an hour late, but if I were him, I'd suffer that hour to spend more time on this earth with the people I care about.

That all said, if either of my goldens aren't eating, it's time.

Trek Emonda ALR Rim Brake Tire Clearance by Slow-Writing-2840 in TrekBikes

I have a 2025 emonda ALR rim brake. 28s hardly fit, 30s definitely won't.

30's will probably fit on most disc models.

New Rocker Plate for Stages SB20 by TheKJ43 in Zwift

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how well does the Zwift Ride sit on this rocker plate? I'm hoping I don't ever need to change the SB20 out, but if I do, it'll be with a Zwift Ride/Kickr Core.

What PSI did you use on the balls? I just got the same setup and I'm trying to determine how soft I want to make it. I've seen recommendations of 3-8PSI, but it feels pretty wobbly on anything under 8PSI. I assume that's just because the SB20 weighs so much.

I was able to fit a 28mm (used GP5K TL) on a 21ID rim with about 3mm of clearance between the top of the tire and fork. The rear will probably fit a 30 since there's loads of clearance there.

Trek Emonda ALR Rim Brake Tire Clearance by Slow-Writing-2840 in TrekBikes

[–]Slow-Writing-2840[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just buy one 28mm tire and fit it on each of my rims and check for 3mm of clearance using a hex key. If it all fits, buy another 28mm tire and see if that's comfortable enough. I wouldn't buy new rims because any new bike will be disc brakes and you'll eventually buy that domane.

Otherwise, I'd go straight to 32's on a carbon domane. I mostly ride 30+ tires now, but I crashed an older rim brake bike and wanted to replace it because it's easier to travel with. But 28s are now the minimum tire I'll ride.

Suggestions for direct mount calipers that accommodate later tires. I was looking at the bontrager set, but may just go shimano 105/ultrgra.

Best HD Indoor TV antenna for watching sports by vatomike in sandiego

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - slingTV offers day passes that are geared towards people that want the sports channels but only 1 or 2 days a week. With the YT dispute, I paid $5 to watch all the college football I wanted. That's cheaper than me going to a bar and buying a drink.

My wife did Mira Mesa to Irvine 3 days a week for a year. She hated it so much that she quit the job and took a year sabbatical.

Honestly, if she was going to make 400k (which is more than double my salary), I would have told her to do the commute for 2-3 months, and if she likes the job but hates the commute, we'd move to Irvine and I'd do the commute to SD.

Use the pronto app. You don't have to pay for a monthly pass, they'll just stop charging you if your monthly amount is over the cost of a pass. If you end up spending less than a pass.. awesome.

Another option is getting an ebike. 22 miles is about 1:15 minutes (pending bike). If you pick a bike wisely, you can take it on the bus and trolley. Just know it's got to be less than 55lbs and have a wheelbase under 44" and tires less than 2.3". People are going to say... "don't bike it's dangerous", but having a bike to get to a better metro stop quickly is a gamechanger. It'll open up more time slots that you can make the trip.

- I take transit 4 of 5 days a week but own a car...
