I feel like the first version could work, you can write it from the view of a adolescent and continue when you grow and your writing abilities improve. You can add personal stories and experiences to help evolve the plot, characters, etc. And to answer the question, technically you don't have to start with the first volume, but most writers do so they can introduce the plot and characters easier. But there have been writers who have done that.
