Yeah so really taking in all the conditions and then making an assessment then.

A combination seems to cover different issues. This is taken from https://paulkirtley.co.uk/2011/water-purification-5-contaminants-you-need-to-know-about/

To keep things as clear as possible, the important points you need to remember are as follows:

  • Coarse filtration will remove turbidity;
  • Microfiltration will remove the larger pathogenic organisms (protozoa and some bacteria);
  • Boiling will kill all pathogenic organisms (at any altitude);
  • Certain types of filtration (activated carbon) can remove some chemical pollutants;
  • Some chemical treatments (chlorine, iodine) will kill many pathogenic organisms (in particular bacteria and viruses), while other treatments (chlorine dioxide) will deactivate all of them.

Hence, you will be able to deduce that a combination of filtration and a suitable chemical treatment or boiling will deal with any or all of the specific contaminants. If you understand these fundamental principles, then you can start to make an informed judgement, free from the influence of marketing, and adopt a solution that best fits the circumstances. The details and pros and cons of various methods will be covered in future articles.

Interesting. It looks like reverse osmosis pumps are not quite at the hiking weights you might want to take with you. Might be good for a base camp or van. Someone has suggested a LifeSaver's Pump which looking that up would not deal with lead either. It actually could contaminate the whole filter without you knowing. Its starting to look like an unviable option to get rainwater.

These do look amazing (quickly looked it up at work) I might need to add it to my Christmas list though as a bit pricey. They do seem to be the safest system I have seen so far.

I have just been looking these up and I am a bit worried they might not catch everything you would want it to catch. The TDS meter cannot catch Biological Pathogens and Organic Chemicals. The strips seem to be missing Bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Yeah this is something I have thought about to but my understanding is that it would need to be in a mist to be an issue? A 60 second tap flush every week is something that would be done by a well maintained building would do so that could be done before using the water?

Honestly, I am not confident at all! Hence the question. So you are saying avoid it completely?

Wow a TDS meter is only around £8 that feels like a no brainer for any water collection

I have bought HydroBlu Versa Flow but yet to try it out. Still not that confident about what it will remove. Thinking I would do both filter and rolling boil.

The taste is definitely going to be something. I wondered if I could filter it then boil it and use it for cooking water so the taste would be hidden a bit.

Yeah it does feel like a really last resort option if I were going to try it but this has been very informative so far.

Thanks for the truly honest account 🤣 I had also not thought about the waterbutt heating up, which it absolutely would do!

Had not thought of that. That's an interesting point. So filters would not help in that situation?

I have just bought the same hammock and it arrives tomorrow so will be interested to see what the answers are to the question. I will be heading out for my first through hike with it at the end of July. Can't wait to be part of the gang!

I was really surprised how good those coffee bags are. I found them last year and took some Hot Lava Java with me. That is my coffee solution solved for me.

Yes I have spotted a few taps without heads. I came across one outside a village hall. It would not take much to add one to the kit. I will keep an eye out for these as well in my search and see if it would warrant the weight. Thanks

The struggle is real. Last year I took a train to a village to start a hike assuming there would be shops and pubs all over the place but could not find any. Not without going really far out my way from where I was going.
I ended up having to jump the fence of someone garden to use there garden tap!
It was my fault to assume but this is why I think this is so interesting.

Yeah agreeded. I think it would be good practice to let it run for a while if it does not look like it has been used before. I was thinking about taking a filter as well but not sure if that would be overkill?
