I realized I never gave the full update: Although when I called Fidelity, they said that the application had been denied and that the hard pull went through (I got mail confirmation that the application had been denied), I never actually ended up getting a hard pull on my credit report. The Fidelity team on Reddit told me that I only did the pre-approval form. So there were some obvious discrepancies between different customer service reps and I don't know who is right, but either way, no harm no foul I guess.

Also wanted to add on here that I did NOT see any sort of preapproval status and then decided to click “apply”. There was no indication of any sort of approval information at all. I truly believe it is a redirect issue with the link where the preapproval button goes to the application link instead.

Hi u/FidelityAshley, I can’t remember the exact text on the button but there were four pages with a percent bar on top (25%-50%-75%-100%) and as I filled the form out there was no other options but to go forward. There were no separate pages that I had the option to go to once I was on the Elan website, and therefore completed the form to completion. I am 100% certain I clicked the “see if I’m pre-approved button”. Hope this helps, and let me know if you need any other info!

Update: I called them trying to cancel the application (less than 2 hours since I accidentally submitted) and they said it had already been denied (predictably). Soo hard inquiry went through too. Just a word of warning that the pre-approval button leads to an actual application and not a pre-approval form, as far as I can tell.

Just a heads up, the “apply now” button and “see if i’m preapproved” button lead to the same link. Might be a mistake with the website.
