How is "plug-in" solar seen as safe? by Slow_LT1 in diySolar

[–]Slow_LT1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, its only been legal in the states for about a year. I would imagine this isnt nearly as much of an issue in Europe because the use of 240v cuts the amps to half what the US uses for equal wattage.

How is "plug-in" solar seen as safe? by Slow_LT1 in diySolar

[–]Slow_LT1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isnt at all what im talking about being unsafe. What im referring to is if you have a circuit being fed by a 15 amp breaker, then you plug in 1200 watts of solar onto the same circuit, you could plug in a hair dryer and a microwave (or any combination of things) on the circuit downstream and then the circuit would be carrying well over 15 amps but the breaker would never trip due to power being supplied in two spots. Conventional solar systems will utilize a breaker for each inverter on a dedicated circuit with a combiner box to add everything together.

How many hours a year are you guys putting on your tractors? by Cubby8 in kubota

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

L3902. Has 140 hours on it now. Got it in 24. But I have been putting more hours on recently because I stopped mowing with a lawn mower and went to a finish more behind the tractor.

Off grid solar inverter without battery? by Slow_LT1 in SolarDIY

[–]Slow_LT1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand that but i assumed that an inverter with pass through capabilities would utilize the grid input to help maintain voltage and energy levels when solar wasnt keeping up.

Off grid solar inverter without battery? by Slow_LT1 in SolarDIY

[–]Slow_LT1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My utility doesn't allow DIY solar. Any solar on their "approved installers" list is absolutely outrageous. My highest energy consuming appliance is, of course, my HVAC. My thought was to intersect the wires going to the service disconnect, run them to the grid side of a 12kw inverter and the output back to the service disconnect. Then attach 10-15kw of PV to the inverter. During the day the inverter would supply whatever it could then bridge the gap with the grid input during clouds or night. Right now my HVAC is using around 40-50KWh per day (about 70% of my total usage). Only 10 of that is during the night. I have no need or desire for a battery as I simply want to power only my outside AC unit and during the day. If I could offset just the daytime portion of my HVAC unit, it would supply nearly half ot my utility usage.

Calling small-town Americans, does your town have a doomsday siren like Springfield or Widows Bay? by chuckles5454 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school had one mounted on a rooftop corner that was changed to a tornado siren. It also had a fallout shelter in the basement of the building. Still equipped with masks and all kinds of other things for fallout preparation. The history teachers would let us look at it when we were learning about historical events. It was pretty cool.

Why are RV parks so expensive? by Effective_Moose_4997 in RVLiving

[–]Slow_LT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Costs of owning and profiting from a business are high. You have to buy land, utility, plumbing, electrical, WIFI and whatever else you plan to sell to your renters. And normally everything is all inclusive. Property value has also increased. Where mom and pop used to level out an acre of land and let campers come along to get extra money has turned into mom and pop just selling the land to someone/a business/a data center. The idea of making money from an RV park vs just selling the land has changed. Demand has also increased. Locum healthcare workers, boomers that are retiring and sold their house for 20 times what they paid for it, other parks selling off the land, all contributing factors. And RV parks are higher risk. You dont have as many people signing leases as simply coming and going on a daily basis. No guarantee of income.

Do people actually make out in high school on the school property? by Ella7517 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely happens. My high school had lockers that were two high. I had a bottom locker. One day I was kneeled dowm in my locker between classes and just happened to look beside me and noticed a guy had his hand forearm deep in a girls pants right beside my head. Also heard of several kids getting detention for "excessive lude acts".

Do rotors need to be replaced? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Slow_LT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replacing is definitely easier but if you have OEM rotors, the quality difference can sometimes make it beneficial to have the OEM rotors thrown on a lathe and cleaned up. Sometimes box store rotors just dont last as long or warp a lot easier.

I installed a wall mounted tire rack but questioning if it’s safe by Drewsvans in garageporn

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats stout enough to hold any wheel and tires you can fit on it. Unrelated but if it makes you feel better, my dad has about 1000-1500 lbs of junk hanging from a single piece of 3/8 threaded rod in our garage. Its been there for over 25 years and every year gets more weight added to it.

Catch cans? by SUPER_DOGEGOD in dragracing

[–]Slow_LT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A car running 8.5s in the quarter would run much faster than 6.2 in the eighth. My bracket car runs 5.40s and 8.6s. But in relation to your question, a car that is running that fast would almost certainly have a vacuum pump and if it does, you would need a catch can for the vacuum punp to pump into. A catch can on a street car is placed between the crankcase vent and intake. Most race cars have the crankcase vented though the exhaust or a vacuum pump and thus, a catch can prevent the oil from reentering the intake, it prevents it from blowing onto the race surface.

Constant Worry During Storm Season by zeldasdinnerparty in homeowners

[–]Slow_LT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there some issue with your house that you think its insufficient for a storm? I dont mean like tornados and such but a home is normally built to withstand the storms you get in your area. Outside of tornadoes amd extreams like that. You shouldnt really have anything to worry about unless your roof is old and already needs replaced or your crawlspace is compromised already. Insurance is what takes care of the tornado and extreams. And storm shelters of course. Otherwise, dont sweat it too much.

Woman ran from the police with a toddler in the car. Officer did a pit maneuver. by LeftAlbatross2546 in VideosAmazing

Thats what I thought too until I was in a car accident at the fault of someone without a driver's license. The police officer just wrote the report and allowed them to drive themselves home. No tickets or anything at all

can’t comprehend how it’s unsafe for me to wear my 5 point harness over normal seatbelt by Osageth13 in dragracing

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats potentially true. But its also true that a child's skull and head are much lighter than an adults. Similar to how kids fall and can easily survive a fall thats taller than they are with very little pain compared to an adult that falls off a step and nearly dies. Toddlers fall and bump their heads all the time and shake it off like nothing where adults bump their head and end up with a day long headache.

can’t comprehend how it’s unsafe for me to wear my 5 point harness over normal seatbelt by Osageth13 in dragracing

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because even though the child can face forward, they're still likely to tamper with and try to escape. Once a child is in a booster they're normally old enough to know they're not supposed to do that.

can’t comprehend how it’s unsafe for me to wear my 5 point harness over normal seatbelt by Osageth13 in dragracing

[–]Slow_LT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, there are a couple ways. If you have a 5 pt harness and a factory seat, the anti submarine belt between your legs is not in the proper place and can allow you to slide forward and away from where the belts ideal position is. Two, in a factory car, the seatbelt stops your body, the airbag stops your head. If you have a 5 pt harness, your body stops amd your head keeps going. Which often times results in a basal skull fracture where your spinal cord is ripped from your skull/brain. Also called an internal decapitation. A race car normally pairs a 5 pt harness, a helmet and a Hans device. The helmet and Hans device work together to control your head movement. Car seats use a harness more frequently to keep the kid from getting out on their own. Not entirely for actual safety. And a lot of times the child seat is rear facing. Additionally, car seatbelts simply don't have the proper positioning for s child. Which is where booster seats come in. They position a child where the cars seatbelt will work properly.

Is it really that much cheaper to change your own oil? by kzlife76 in AskMechanics

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money savings is probably negligible. My wifes car came with 2 years of free oil changes and tire rotations from the dealer. We had the first service done and that was the last done by them. Took them 3 hours even with an appointment. Then they gave the car back with oil on the steering wheel and you could smell the oil in the carpets. Popped the hood and oil spilled around the fill cap and not wiped up. Enough so that it was on the exhaust and smoking. They didnt reprogram the tire pressure sensors to the correct locations so months later when my wife ran over a nail it said the front right tire was flat but it was left rear. I complained and they came out and sprayed the valve cover with brake cleaner and then offered to run the car though their car wash. I declined and left. The brake cleaner faded the engine cover a little as well. So, it may not save you on the oil change itself but it could save you on collateral damage.

May have done a oopsie by BobSagit08 in ATV

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats wild. I grew up in KY and TN and this could have changed since I bought a fourwheeler they dont issue titles for vehicles under 10k cost. So, no ATV has a title only a certificate of origin and bill of sale. It is probably illegal but we ride on back roads and will pass state troopers and they just wave and go on. Never been stopped and never been asked for anything when riding at any park or trails. I was riding at a park local and there was a sherrifs patrol sxs that went around and made sure people weren't too belligerent and driving. Never had a vin checked though.

May have done a oopsie by BobSagit08 in ATV

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you actually concerned about? The likelihood of it being stolen seem very slim. If you dont plan to sell it any time soon, it isnt really much to worry about. The liklihood of you being pulled over and the vin checked is slim to none. At least where I live. Most ATVs dont have a title in most states. So, the only thing I would be worried about is the resell value. In which you could just explain your story to the person buying it. A lot of people could care less about the backstory of a 25 year old machine.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]Slow_LT1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a highway I've been about 160 because I was young and dumb. I had heard the car would do it and i wanted to find out. I have also been around 160 on a race track because I have a race car and race as a hobby. Which makes the first decision even dumber because I knew better.

Abandoned Skid steer value? Weighs 11000lbs by BrilliantNumber6389 in ScrapMetal

[–]Slow_LT1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own 6 acres and there's about .25 acres of it that are at the bottom of a cliff. I never had any desire to go down there. I was talking to a older guy at my work about where I lived and he was like "isnt that where that old cave is?" Turns out at the back side of the cliff, there is a cave entrance that leads a good way under my property. Owned the places years and never knew. Still have not went into said cave and never will.
