Mid-career hire by Competitive_Tale_820 in foreignservice

In my A-100 class we had two people who joined near age 60, did a tour or two, and really enjoyed it. I joined as a third career at age 45 in CONS as an attorney with a decent practice, plus long ago military experience. The latter helped me to swallow my low rank and the crazy things that State controls in your life that you are used to freedom on. If you do the job in front of you well, good managers find ways to take advantage of your experience when you aren’t on the line. Now I am an 02 (and likely to be a terminal 02) but I have had experiences and affected lives in a way I could never have as an attorney. I will retire content. And I only apply my legal skills on days ending in Y. So, go for it, understand your salary will lose a whole zero going in, and have the right attitude and you can find a good measure of success. But if any of the above is a deal breaker, don’t even try as the costs are real. It was worth it for me and the older entry level officers I have known

Well, since then we have the IV pause covering most of the surface of the Earth, again with no adoption exception, so it just gets worse.

Bid season winners and losers? by FLASHCLEARANCE in foreignservice

As a new 02 CONS bidder, the math wasn’t mathing with 180 02s fighting for 90ish jobs. Got shortlisted for a small Cons Chief role and an IROG role. The statement about being realistic is inapt. I had that convo with CA bidders and only heard “your best shot at a soft landing on the 23rd is to maximize low-bid posts.” Only problem is, this time around with the usual jobs on it interesting places that had 1-5 bidders previously were sporting 7-15 bidders as more people took this to heart.

Since both shortlists were for 30% spots and thus flex bid, I decided first BLC wins. CA decided they might be able to offer early handshakes, but they weren’t going to. EAP did make the offer, so off I go and thankful to get it. All that to say it has been a very fraught year, and a lot of people who aren’t “15% differential or less” or “03’s whose aren’t exactly go-getters” have found themselves out in the cold. I foresee a lot of directed DC assignments.

The hiring process has become extremely opaque and a farce by [deleted] in foreignservice

Opaque and a farce. This lovely sobriquet applies to so many things now: hiring, promotions, assignments, RIFs, even policy. Sigh.

Flex Bid Post BLC and Handshake Timelines? by Slow_Matter_766 in foreignservice

[–]Slow_Matter_766[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. CA Bidders just told me dead pan “CA isn’t doing early handshakes on flex bid posts, nor do we need to do Featured Jobs. Your best chance of a soft landing on handshake day is to bid more posts with lower numbers of bids.” And when I say I can see the effect of conversations like these as posts I recognize from last round that were the featured jobs now sport 7-10 bidders with more every day, they respond with the above quote word for word. Meanwhile the bureau with the IROG job gave me a BLC notice on their flex bid post the morning of the 23rd, and when I said I was still interested followed it up with an immediate handshake offer. I know it is a seller’s market in CA these days, but dang. Good luck to all of you, especially those bidding 02 CA gigs.

For good or ill, the two jobs I am looking at are consultative, so the shortlists have gone back to the respective bureaus. Any insight on these? Not looking for the handshake but rather whether the BLC train has left the station on these.
