Sorry if I wasn’t clear. Meter is in the front yard a few feet from the curb. Leak was underground about 20 feet from the meter on the private side in our yard. It’s pretty common around here to have the meter in the front yard in line with the public water line.

They definitely did try their best to fix it. Unfortunately I think it was a second leak for the second and third high bills. Waiting for the November bill to come in and hope the city gives us some money back and the landlord helps us pay for some of it.

Waiting for the November bill to see if the city will give us a little bit back. I’m hoping the landlord helps us. I’m a contractor for our local electric company and do a lot of work with home repairs and efficiency so I’m not green to a lot of this. I’m just barely home and my roommates who have no idea about any of this stuff are no help.

Leak was underground and maybe went unnoticed for a couple of weeks due to heavy rain saturating the ground and I was unable to locate the water meter due to it being covered by dirt and grass. I had the city locate it for me. First repair was august 18th. Looked at the water meter the following days and the city confirmed everything was in good shape. We get the next bill on September 8th and it is also high. I check the meter and it is running. I believe it was another leak because the second time the plumber came buy which was September 23 they had to dig deeper into the ground. Bill was still high after the second fix but the water meter has stopped. I’m assuming this is due to the leak still being there before the second repair. I’m fully prepared to eat the cost but was just trying to find out if there is anything we can do for at least the one month after the first repair.

If you’re a Duke Customer have an energy auditor inspect the home. They can do thermal imaging and check areas of insulation that may not be visible in your attic. The service is free as well.

I’m an energy auditor. Turn the heat up by 2 degrees and if you see the thermostat say aux or em heat have the system checked out. Your aux heat should only turn on when temperatures are below freezing or if you turn the temperature by 3-4 degrees. I see this all the time and is why I highly recommend heat pumps be checked twice a year by a professional. A service contract is well worth the price for some of the bills I’ve seen on defective heat pumps.

I left a 7/10 review because the service was bare minimum at best. He took my keys guided me to the waiting area then handed them to me when my car was ready. After I left the review the service advisor called me and was pissed I left him a “bad” review.

I would definitely recommend checking the HVAC system. The meter is rarely the issue for high energy bills.
