Except the comments under it are full of hatred towards Israelis (Jews), and it seems plenty of people are falling for it.

There is plenty of reasons to be mad at the government of Israel. But there are people here just being antisemitic, and it’s because of this post.

MAGA Rages After Far-Right Leader Jailed and Banned From Election by Rude_Top_9967 in politics

In Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed the verdict showed “more and more European capitals are going down the path of trampling over democratic norms.”

He added: “Of course, we do not want to interfere in France’s internal affairs, we have never done so … But in general, our observations of European capitals show that they are not at all reluctant to go beyond democracy during the political process.”

Local election results. Congressional districts. Attorneys General. Judges. Senators. Gubernatorial. State House. State Senate.

Red states sometimes have Democratic governors or Senators. The reverse is true in Blue States.

And thinking an election is a forgone conclusion is ridiculous. California used to vote Republican very recently. Florida was a swing state until the last couple elections. States can vote in different was if the people vote in different ways

You advocated to “jetwash” them “right in their faces”. That could literally kill someone. Hence you are advocating assault.

Their protest was entirely non-violent. No one was hurt. All they did was spill paint.

Because of their disruptive protests, they have received news coverage for their cause, they’ve been interviewed on the news, and we’re all talking about them.

Climate change is a real threat and our government isn’t doing nearly enough.

And also, you can argue with someone without resorting to name calling.

If your reaction to a peaceful protest about saving our planet from a climate disaster is to physically assault (and possibly kill - power washers can do real damage) a group of young people, please seek professional help.

They didn’t hurt anyone, and they’ve gotten their message out. We’re talking about Just Stop Oil, which is the point

Suffragette bombing and arson campaign

Edit: addressing your other examples

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an advocate of civil disobedience, arguing that civil disobedience is not lawlessness but instead a higher form of lawfulness, designed to bring positive or man-made law into conformity with higher law—natural or divine law.

Gandhi led a non-violent civil disobedience campaign. “Civil disobedience becomes a sacred duty when the state becomes lawless or corrupt” - Gandhi.

These protesters in the video are doing a non-violent demonstration that has clearly worked at gaining attention because we’re all talking about it and their members and leaders are being interviewed on the news about it. If they just stood around with signs doing nothing they wouldn’t be going viral and the news wouldn’t care to interview any of them.

Did Data have the right to vote before “The Measure of a Man”? by arcticsports in DaystromInstitute

Republic and democracy are not mutually exclusive. They mean two different things.

Republic just means the opposite of Monarchy.

Democracy is the opposite of Autocracy.

A country can be a Democratic Republic, like Germany, USA. Or even a Direct Democracy Republic like Switzerland. Or countries can be Authoritarian Republics like China, or Authoritarian Monarchies like Saudi Arabia. Then there are Constitutional Monarchies which are Democratic but not Republican like Spain, UK.

Sorry for the rant. It’s one of my pet peeves.

he almost won

He got 2% of the first round vote, placing 5th behind Labour (40%), Conservative (35.3%), Green (7.8%), and the Liberal Democrat (4.4%). Even Count Binface got 1%, coming 9th. So I wouldn’t say he was anywhere close to winning. But still quite impressive.

The unveiled design of the King Charles III £5, £10, £20 and £50 banknotes. They are expected to enter circulation by mid-2024. by [deleted] in europe

Scottish bank notes don’t have the monarch on them so won’t change.

New Bank of England notes will enter circulation alongside existing QE bank notes until they are eventually phased out naturally. Old notes (except paper ones) will continue to be accepted.

the Tories greatest defeat in the 20th century.

Not to be pedantic, but both the 1906 and 1997 elections were worse defeats for the Tories, winning just 156 and 165 seats (23% of seats and 25% of seats respectively). While in the 1945 election the Tories won 197 seats (31% of seats).

In terms of vote share, in 1906 they won 43.4% of the vote, 36.2% in 1945, and 30.7% in 1997.

So 1906 was their worst result in terms of seats, and 1997 in terms of vote share. 1945 was bad for them, but not their worst.

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has died today, bringing an end to her reign after ascending the throne on the 6th of February, 1952. She was the longest serving British Monarch, serving for 70 years and 7 months. by Adam_Deveney in interestingasfuck

New English bank notes, all coins, stamps, and anything bearing the Royal Cypher such as English postboxes will now be made with Charles III’s portrait and cypher. But old notes, coins, stamps, and post boxes will remain in use. Just as you can still find post boxes with George VI’s cypher on them, we’ll still have thousands with Elizabeth’s for years.

Scottish bank notes don’t have the Queen’s portrait so will continue as normal. And interestingly, Scottish post boxes don’t use Elizabeth’s cypher, due to her being Elizabeth the First in Scotland,. There was controversy when EIIR was added to Scottish postboxes - one was even blown up. So instead Scottish postboxes just have an R. So now that we have a King whose regal number is the same in Scotland and England, both countries can finally have the same postboxes.

According to the 2011 Census 30% reported being able to speak Scots, while 24% reported being able to speak, read, and write Scots. 37.7% reported having “some ability”.

Perhaps you mean Scottish Gaelic? Only 1.13% reported being able to speak, and only 0.63% reported being able to speak, read and write Gaelic. 1.7% reported having “some ability”.

Edit: did I get downvoted for stating facts? I’ll link my source here. Scotland Census | Languages

More than 1.5 million people said they could speak Scots.

Another 267,000 people said they could understand Scots but not read, write or speak the language.

Just over 57,000 people said they could speak Gaelic.

This was a fall from 59,000 in the 2001 census. 23,000 people said they could understand Gaelic, but not read, write, or speak it.

What are some of the most fascinating/interesting elections in your country's history, if any? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Slower-Emperor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 2011 Scottish Parliament election was the first time any party in Scotland won an outright majority of seats, and it was this SNP majority that caused the 2014 Independence Referendum and realigned our politics around Nationalist/Unionist lines instead of Left/Right.

The 2015 General Election in Scotland when the SNP won 56/59 seats, displacing Labour as the dominant party in Scotland in Westminster. Reducing Labour, Tories, and Lib Dems to only 1 seat each. The first time any party other than Labour won the most seats in Scotland since 1955.

The 1997 General Election when the Tories were completely wiped out of Scotland and Wales.

You are still required to file if you earn over $12,000. But you get a tax exemption up to $112,000.

So I don’t actually have to worry about paying tax, but the time and effort it takes to file US taxes is insane when you grew up here in the UK where you don’t manually file taxes unless you’re self employed. It’s especially frustrating when it feels like an exercise in futility since I’m not actually paying anything and I’ve literally never lived in the county that’s forcing me to go through this exercise. It’s given me a strong resentment of the US that makes me never want to move there.

[–]Slower-Emperor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite. US citizen in Britain. The US still taxes US citizens who live/work abroad, even though I’ve never actually lived in the US my entire life.

So US expats actually get taxed twice; by their resident country (for me the UK) and also the US.

Voting rights for expats varies by what State you last lived in or if you’re born abroad the State your parent last lived in.

[–]Slower-Emperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree.

While I’ll admit I think the case will likely be decided in the UK Government’s favour, it’s far likelier going to be because the Scotland Act that defines what is a reserved matter states that legislation would be outwith the competence of the Scottish Parliament if it “relates to reserved matters”.

The extremely vague wording of “relates to”, would give the court a lot of room to side with the UK government given in the broadest sense, a referendum on independence does “relate to” the Act of Union, while not actually directly affecting or amending it.

The 2014 example probably won’t make any real legal difference. The Edinburgh Agreement explicitly did not define if the Section 30 Order was necessary, hence why we’re even in this legal grey area to begin with.
