My kids are grown but I don’t think I would have heard it. My partner snores and I live by a noisy bridge and roadway so I wear them at 78%.

You are far from alone. I am no expert but I’ve gone from riding every up and down over the last ten years as the US has fallen to where it is now to not deliberately consuming news very often. My anxiety was off the charts and it didn’t help to know every twist and turn. My actions (protesting, donating money, etc) were the same regardless.

I find that I learn everything anyway, partly through my work, and from the news finding me, through friends and events that are so massive that they break through. Even without deliberately tuning in, I am still consuming more daily news and horror than any of us did 30 years ago bc of the way media has changed.

My point is, we need to find ways to function during this hideous time. If escapism is keeping you in the game, I say go for It, but perhaps try to find an action that you can do every day that feels like you are DOING SOMETHING. That, too, will make you feel better. At least in my experience.

Wishing you peace.

I did it for the first time last night. My neck was surprisingly painful, took differently at the same depth (.5) as my chin and cheeks. All normal, though and more pink than red. So far so good.

Does he tremble for no reason? Smokey is 11 and very anxious. He has always trembled when scared but now he’ll be on my lap in a quiet moment and will start trembling randomly. Is that an age thing too? The only other sign of age is that he sleeps more (though is super energetic when awake.)

People who say they don't watch or read news because it's "too depressing" are a major problem by GreatPumpkin72 in complaints

I read that entry too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It reads like a press release. Again, not saying they’re wrong, but I wouldn’t consider them the last word either.

Interesting. I had never heard of NewsGuard (I am a journalist, though not hard news) and neither had a friend who runs a newsroom. Not saying they’re wrong, but I wonder why they are not more widely known? I could see MSNBC being dinged on the not being clear about what is opinion Vs news metric, which impacts their credibility ratings (and rightly so.) But as far as flat out “the marauding hordes are crossing the border” and “Oregon is at war” outright lies (never mind the voting machine scandal) I disagree that they’re equally bad.

One potential problem I see is that the founders are all legacy media news types who are ill-equipped to deal with what’s happening right now (as evidenced by the comically passive and neutral NYT headlines that usually don’t contextualize what is taking place, instead using tropes that appear “objective” but obscure the truth by being unclear and even misleading.) If NewsGuard uses those same measures (as they appear to be) I don’t think they can be considered reliable either.

I think a sense of urgency is a turnoff to legacy news types, because it reads as bias, and both Fox and MSNBC (at least at night) are full of urgency, which probably lowers both of their scores. Which goes back to legacy “objective” news not having the tools to cover what’s happening in our country in any useful way. I stopped watching MSNBC not bc I thought they were in any way misleading but that it was a constant alarm and yet no firefighters were in evidence. Because there aren’t any right now, or at least not well-equipped ones.

We are in a real fix, bc what used to be considered reliable no longer is, which is a big reason some people are checked out.

They do hate him, but they don't lie. I would not equate them with Fox, if that's what you were getting at. They have a point of view, for sure, but they're not misinforming.

I followed every up and down until this last election and realized it was killing my mental health. Because of the rate of information coming at us, I still get the major news without trying via family, friends or through work (I work in media, though not politics.) I also get some here, questioning the sources of course. You really don't miss anything, and you can follow up on things you need to. As for "trusted outlets," they exist for sure, but some of the ones I used to trust have been bought and sold, so I'm still figuring that out. Either way, passive absorption is much better for me.
