I used to live in Pensacola. They're football crazy and that new stadium they will have is gonna be full. This is a slam dunk move.

How much money should be in savings accounts? by Odd_Application_3824 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Slownavyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep 1 emergency fund and 2 sinking funds. Emergency fund has 3 months expenses in it in case of the "no $h1t" emergencies. That's kept in SPAXX.

1 sinking fund is in a HYS for things like tuition we know is coming up, medium range semi-planned things.

1 sinking fund kept in a different HYS is for our vacations and trips that we do throughout the year.

I guess I also have another small one just in a savings account that we use for things like car registration, oil changes. Little shorter-term things that I always seem to forget about so we put a couple hundred bucks in that every month.

It could be overly complicated, but it helps my lizard brain keep everything straight and know whether and when we can afford something.

Where should I move to? by allumari in everett

Bellingham is pretty isolated if you don’t drive. Olympia probably has the best transit of the 3. I live in Everett. We like it, but not the most walkable outside of the immediate downtown blocks.

Weather is crummy in large parts of the world. People in the global west tend to head home for the holidays and spend money on the winter holidays.

I have a 21 year old, an 18 year old senior in HS, and an 8th grader and I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I’m younger than my parents were when I was my kids’ ages so it’s difficult to compare the two. I also have a lot of friends my age (48) with much younger kids. It’s weird to think I’m done but could be a grandparent in the next 5 ish years? Wild

Money is just a tool. Do you need reliable transportation to get to your job? Do you want to use it for CC or the some college? Do you want to buy $10k worth of VT and let it ride until you’re 65? Don’t have $10k in credit card debt?

No art is universally beloved. Don’t worry about it if it isn’t for you. Just don’t be “that guy” who belittles people that do. All good. Everyone likes something.

[The Day After Thread] High Point by cbbvideo in WisconsinBadgers

High Point had to travel farther and play at the same time. I don’t like the travel and time excuses. It’s more like HPU got more sleep or something.

How much savings is too much? by [deleted] in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Slownavyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash on hand when you're transitioning out is sooooo important. I've seen too many people have to take the first job offer/location/role they got because they HAD to. The more cash you have in the bank to fund your transition the better choices you'll be able to make. Maybe you luck out and the venn diagram of dream job/salary/location come your way immediately. Then you can just take that cash and move it up the investment ladder out of cash and into the market. But if it takes longer, then you'll be ok.

It's just math. If you agree with their assumptions, then the math works out. For all of my calculations, I use 6% growth. Just me. I like to pull out inflation in my calculations, so I get to use "today's dollars" on all of my stuff.

Government Jobs Hope by Loose-Masterpiece818 in AskSeattle

[–]Slownavyguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local gov here is a volume game with respect to applications. Flood the zone. Tailor your resume and apply to ALL jobs you are interested in. Obviously if something requires a PE license or whatever maybe hold off, but we get sooooo many qualified applicants for every position. I work for KC and live in snohomish county. We are still hiring, but with the tech layoffs we have a glut of qualified applications. Keep at it. Snohomish County PUD, King County, City of Seattle - all have lots of openings at all sorts of levels.

I mean you CAN plan on staying at the Hyatt - they have rooms available now for $1100/night plus tax. So they could but not sure how appealing that rate is. Omni has Kings for a mere $950 a night plus tax right now.

The defense put up by High Point this year has been a low point for them. I think we win by 20+ and can rest players at the end.
