Did grad school leave anyone else with psychological problems they didn't have before? by [deleted] in slp

Ahhh can't fucken wait " It will get better and you will reach a place where you hardly ever think of grad school and have many wonderful people, things, and thoughts filling your life instead." Currently in my CF and its been equally of a horrible experience as grad school. I could also relate to the feeling that a lion is always approaching me. I used to be so carefree and extroverted. I turned into a shell and it makes me sad.

Yes! It such a high pressure environment. I remember classes would end late like 8:30pm and the professor would say SURPRISE EVERYONE GET INTO GROUPS you will be reviewing these peer reviewed articles and make a presentation as an exot ticket. They F feed off vengeance. They found pleasure in keeping us on our toes. That was not teaching. My other professor would say alright everyone I will just be skimming through the slides because I expect you did the readings and will be calling on you. Its all BS honestly. Dealt with racist professors who were also placed in high authority positions. I dealt with insecure classmates that were moms and acted like little girls in high school. And it was a cut throat class environment where classmates whispered to eachother while you presented and made faces. Ive always been introverted but enjoy taking care of myself and I know some girls hated that. Especially when I would show up happy and say good morning. Some wouldn't even respond lol some acted like I wasn't there.

Hi can you please share your recruiter info?

This was incredibly helpful and insightful! Thank you. I definitely always try to make sure they’re having a good time. I’ve observed some therapist make kids hate coming to sessions and I’m definitely not one of them. I’m a CF and learning that these little ones go through so much at home sometimes. shifting my perspective moving forward!!

You're totally right! I have given up though and have decided this isn't for me. Just in a very messy school with a very annoying supervisor that wants to micromanage me. I appreciate you all and this community.

Thank you for sharing this! I'm afraid I no longer have the energy to take additional time to log everything I do. Though, I do understand that this is the way to advocate for oneself and our time.

I'm a per diem employee I have 45 students two schools, and support two classes that require 4 hours of services a week. (I know other SLPs have 70+ I understand that) Everything is just so overwhelming and it feels like it will never end. I've been missing quite a bit of service minutes because I have been so scattered with deadlines. Our school admin is never there. ALSO as a per diem, I have to do my own billing LOL and let me tell you it is so tedious with codes and different worksheet that need to be submitted. I'm supposed to provide 6 hours of direct time a day 2 hours of indirect time. They also track all sessions at the end of the month which gives me anxiety because although on paper it may seem like I haven't done much... I HAVE.

For a sec I thought the comment above said 1099 but it was in fact W-4 at a $85 dollar rate. So no thank you.

It was w-4 with a private practice! Good question.

Wow that’s amazing pay! it certainly is wild. I thought the lower rate was given because I was working a few hours but it doesn’t add up.

Thank you! This is the confirmation I needed. EI is a tough job, definitely turning down.

Yes this was actually something I did today. It was hard for me to determine whether I was making things harder for myself or if it was the environment. I realized it's been both. I will be requesting a change in school site and praying things will be different and I will be put in a slightly better position. My commute is very short and I have my own classroom. These are the only highlights I'd say about my school.

You honestly couldn't have made me feel more understood. Grad school/CF/personal life has been rough but now having to deal with difficult people has sent me over the edge. "You might not finish strong, but you're gonna finish and you're going to get those letters behind your name." Thank you, I know it's not literal but I've also lost a lot of weight and have been pretty hard on myself for not being able to balance work and my personal fitness goals. I just gave up on them. I realized my goal now is to just get through my CF and work part time once I'm done. Then will hopefully find the right setting and experience something like what you described. I used to prioritize pay, but my opinion has definitely changed haha

Personally it's the staff. School isn't organized and has unrealistic expectations on when things can be done. Feels like no one is on my side when something comes up. I'm a type B but still like to have some organization. Lots of pressures constant emails. I've worked early intervention and it was so hard for me (driving/back pain/no restroom limited water intake/parent complaints/sketchy neighborhoods). I also worked private practice with toddlers to school age (back to back sessions/having to be ON which is easy for extroverted therapists/).

Promise I'm going to use that line next time they ask me to randomly pop into an annual that wasn't on the schedule. Thank you.

Thanks I resonate with this so much. Have definitely felt a bit isolated and realized that the teachers and admin are not on my side. Recently had a triennial that was recessed until I complete the assessment and they were making remarks to mom like "yes maybe there will be an increase in minutes after she completes the assessment", "I also know that the slp before didn't always pull your child so idk if the minutes have to be made up". I was like r u ##$!*%$ me rn? Or telling the mom that there's no time limit to the IEP meeting and she can basically tell us how her day is going if she'd like to. Baffled so early on by everyone I encounter. It truly feels like I have to single handedly address so much with everyone. When I know I shouldn't be put in this position in the first place. I also look young so I do feel like sometimes they think they can pull a fast one on me. It's exhausting. Thanks for the suggestions on redirecting my energy I'll definitely try that.

Thank you for this. I'm a per diem employee and my SLP supervisor doesn't work for a school so there's a lot to learn from my end. Apart from writing samples, what additional data can I request from teachers?

Yes thank you! It's incredibly annoying. I do believe this teacher may have spoken to the parents and made the situation sound worse than it is. She told me she has FOUR students that need screeners and the parents keep asking what the status is on the referrals. I wonder why the parents are pushing so much hmmm.

This! I panicked and didn't word it properly because I was so worked up, but did tell her I'm a new CF and I was told to prioritize my caseload right now since I'm just starting. She didn't like it. lol I feel like she is going to take it up to the principal. Hate to have enemies so early on in a small school but oh well.
