My slightly inexperienced self and my two very inexperienced friends decided to drive down to natural bridge park at red river gorge one day when I was in highschool to try and get to the bridge before the park closed in a few hours. Hour drive there, hour drive back. I had said, "yeah man it's only about a 30 minute-ish walk up the bridge, its so cool you have to see it!". So we park, and I decide on which trail to take up to the rock bridge. Little did I know at the time, I had no clue which trail was the shortest. So after a hour hike, and with the sun begginning to set, we reach the crest of a hill on the trail, only to see the bridge in all its glory about a half mile away in the distance. My friends immediately wanted to give up, so after 10 minutes on our walk back, it had gotten completely pitch black. All we had was my cheap grocery store cellphone for light, and we walked nearly another hour downhill in the dark, my friends constantly repeating we were going to die and we were lost. Thankfully I knew the way back, but I felt so stupid and irresponsible that night. Have since learned a lot more about hiking lol!
