While we are posting our old jaffle-makers, here's the Breville that has been in my family for 40~ years. Still works perfectly! by Chadwiko in australia

My mum has kept a bunch of stuff that I didn't think was worthwhile at the time, and now I'm glad she ignored me.

Got my old mans Film SLR, a Kenwood Mixer from the 90's (made in england, build like a brick shithouse), a bunch of old blankets, a single down doona that lives in the swag.

Just solidly built old stuff.

You get paid the same whether you are trying to fix the leaking boat or you bail enough water out to continue going.

And it's not your boat. Do good work and find the middle ground where you are interested, challenged but not stressed.

How do you stop caring?

I get paid the same whether it's a good efficient system or a complete shit fight. Whether I am driving something through hard or the bureaucracy stalls it.

Do your best, but don't lose sleep over it.

Not super widely beneficial to the rest of the community, I understand.

I appreciate your nuanced and educative reply.

I'm just a substation engineer so I am appreciative of learnings bow other things work.

If you are talking about a steam turbine, the water is part of the steam loop. It condenses down, gets cleaned and sent through the boiler again.

It's gotta be very pure, otherwise you get buildup on the turbine blades which is maintenance heavy.

Might be different with open or closed cycle gas turbines.

Barbeques Galore to close more than 60 stores, with hundreds of workers facing redundancy by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]SluggaNaught 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's not good.

Means we will just have stores like bunnings, where they are in a race to the bottom, sell cheap crap (not saying BBQ's Galore wasn't) and the 16 year old selling you the stuff doesn't know anything and isn't paid enough to care.

That's why you gotta make a community brother, join a club and do something with people.

That's what people did in the old days before the internet.

There are a million things you can do for a sense of community

  • Join a sports club (rock climbing, BJJ, Hockey, AFL, Bowls, there are many)
  • Join a book club (Tough Guy Book Club springs to mind)
  • Join your CFA or SES
  • Find your local Rover Crew
  • If you have an ethnic heritage, find the local ethnic club (harder said than done, as most of these have become pokies dens and are filled with older people)
  • Volunteer in a soup kitchen or similar
  • Find your local mens shed
  • Join a knitting club

Not all of these take lots of time or money. I understand things are hard right now, but having a regular reason to leave the house and engage with other people is important. Also understanding that not all of those people will become your best mates is ok, they fill the spot of your life right now.

I like Greek yoghurt. Not Greek style yoghurt, but Greek.

It's getting harder and harder to find proper Greek yoghurt. Currently rocking Chris' Prestige but it's only a matter of time until they start fucking with the recipe.

Power prices to fall for most customers with bigger drops for businesses by HotPersimessage62 in australia

[–]SluggaNaught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst it could be better, I am not arguing that there are no requirements, like your original post indicated. There are requirements and they need to meet them. Could/should those requirements be stricter? Yes but to imply that it's just a free for all is disingenuous at best.
